Can’t Unsee: How Racism In Politics Colored My View of the Welterweight Title

0

I’ve been out of the sports writing game for a little over two years now- having made the Faustian bargain called “adulthood” where I spend so much energy at work that I can’t dedicate myself to the things I really enjoy in exchange for owning property and objects to post on Instagram for others to envy: hashtag lifestyleblog hashtag livingthedream.

However, I did make an agreement with the proprietor of this fine website to write about “the most interesting thing to happen at the next national event.” Cue the single most interesting fight week and event I can remember- UFC 209.

*Note: Being broke is terrible and I would never go back there. If at all possible, please do not follow your dreams.

Fuck me, right? How do you pick? Lando Vannata and David Teymur put on an early fight of the year contender. Khabib was forced to pull out of the most anticipated bout on the card due to health issues after some insane political intrigue with his corner to trying to travel to the US. Darren Elkins staged a comeback so tough that his middle name is now “Motherfucking” and then Dan Kelly showed a similar amount of inner steel two hours later. The two top welterweights in the world fought to what could easily have been their second five-round draw in a row. A drunken Michael Bisping and Eddie Bravo engaged in a thirty minute, heated debate on the Fermi Paradox in what I can only consider evidence that there is a god and we share a sense of humor. I have not even mentioned GSP coming out of retirement, yet.

So, the obvious route to go is the social issue that every fight fan loves to be lectured about- racism.

On paper, I had every reason to root for Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson in his rematch for the 170 pound crown against Tyron Woodley. I find Thompson’s fighting style more entertaining. I have a soft spot for southpaws. He has been known to train with some local folks and, as such, has ties to my community. He staged a rather fantastic comeback against Woodley in their first bout to get the draw, and everyone loves a comeback.

But, I found myself hoping Woodley would take this for one reason: He is arguably the most disrespected champion since Frankie Edgar took the lightweight strap from B.J. Penn. (Remember this specific comparison, it will become important in a minute).

Tyron Woodley got the belt he has around his waist by knocking one of baddest men on the planet out cold in the first round, yet no love for him was to be found. UFC Fight Pass’ advertising team used the fact that Woodley, their fucking champion, took a knockout loss back in Strikeforce to hype up an aging commodity in Nate Marquardt. Woodley started talking about money fights being the most important thing to him, a tactic that has endeared many fans to Conor McGregor, and Woodley was accused of ducking Thompson. Woodley intimated that the fans might not like him because of racism and the fans respond that they don’t like him because he thinks fans are racist for not liking him. In the court of public opinion, T-Wood can not  seem to win.

Now I, unable to understand why there are so few Woodley fans out there, did think that maybe the reason was that being simultaneously black and verbosely confident is a great way to lose fans. But, I also thought about the Frankie Edgar comparison- a challenger takes the strap in an upset win, gets no love from the fans and then fights an evenly match opponent to a draw. There are some specific parallels there. And Frankie is white. The children of Italian immigrants have been considered white since the 1960’s when other white people decided European Catholics needed to also count as white in order to maintain majority status. So, that kind of deflates my gut reaction that the Woodley hate is fueled by racism.

That line of thinking is how I reached my most interesting thing about UFC 209. Racism is not the only explanation for why a man like Woodley does not connect with the fanbase. But, it is an explanation. A plausible explanation. And, it took the current political climate for me to see how it is often the go to explanation.

Something I’ve been saying for eight years is that I never had any clue how prevalent racism was in America until we elected a black president. The start of the “fake news” and conspiracy theory craze was largely birthed from the fact that normal people were willing to believe Obama was somehow Kenyan-born. There was no real evidence of it, but the message was simple: the black guy is foreign, less American than the white guy.

I’ve seen a similar message with a lot of the anti-immigration sentiments going around the country. A great deal of meme’d “statistics” have been popping up around social media that conflates numbers of undocumented Mexican immigrants, documented Mexican immigrants and American citizens with Mexican parents as “illegals.” Again, brown equals less American than white.

Once I started seeing the stinger of racism embedded in average Americans’ political opinions, leaking poison into their rationality, I couldn’t un-see it. Every time someone has an opinion I don’t understand or they can’t explain, I have to ask myself “is racism the missing link, here?” In at least some cases, the answer is yes.

So, let’s bring that back to Woodley. There are any number of reasons why a great fighter might not connect with fans. I’ve heard some good arguments and I’m sure I’ll hear more. But, how often is the good explanation the reason and how often is it the excuse to hide the real reason? I don’t know.

Then I imagine being Woodley, who wares this creeping doubt every day as part of his skin color, rather than some purely academic realization that I had after living a privileged life. And I’m left knowing even less.

I didn’t say it would be conclusive. I just said it was interesting.

Eat Fresh-ish: Only 50% Chicken DNA in Subway’s “Oven-Roasted Chicken”

0

Your options for lunch are limited so you make the best of a “meh” situation and go to Subway. After all, you saw an ad where that one guy lost a lot of weight. Sure, he turned out to be a creepy pervert, but he still lost that weight. Oven-roasted chicken is good, right?

Except, not all of that chicken is chicken.

A recent study commissioned in part by the CBC into the nutritional content of fast food showed that Subway’s “oven roasted chicken” was only 53.6 per cent chicken DNA.  And it’s chicken strips used in such sandwiches as “sweet onion teriyaki” were only 42.8 per cent chicken DNA. The majority of the remaining DNA was Soy.

Soy Sandwich. That’s not Spanish for “I’m a Sandwich” either…

It’s not uncommon for fast food meats to have fillers and preservatives –other fast food chicken products tested from McDonalds and Wendy’s scored in the high 80’s and low 90’s– but having such a low percentage of Subway’s “chicken” being actual chicken prompted follow up tests to confirm. Food Scientist Ben Bohrer, from the University of Guelph, explains the process of Restructured Food Products used by many fast food restaurants.

Restructured products are essentially smaller pieces of meat or ground meat,  bound together with other ingredients  to make them last longer, taste better and, as Bohrer puts it, “add value” — restaurant speak for cheaper.

For the time being, if you’re looking for actual animal protein for lunch, you might want to eat a little less “fresh”.

Read the full story from the CBC, including tests of other fast food restaurant chicken items.

First Time Poster Long Time Grappler

It’s 9:53pm on a Wednesday. I finished Jiu Jitsu around 8:30, sat out the last hour, tired. But I sparred today. First time in almost two years. I didn’t last the whole round, five minutes out of six. Lack of rolling and medicine did me in attempting to yank a Kimura from top control, holding my breath. But that’s today, and not where the story begins.

I started BJJ about the same time I joined Bullshido. I was in my early 30’s, was one of the Webmasters for the Gracie Academy in Torrance. I did privates with Rener, trained with Ryron and Ralek, even with Rorion himself a few times and Grandmaster Helio. I was 280lbs back then, thought I was a bad ass, how little did I know that I was far from it.  Nothing opens your eyes than being dominated.  My first roll was a 6 month White Belt, “Omar”.  He tapped me out every 30 seconds.  He was 140lbs. I was hooked.

At my core, I’m a Nomad. I like to move every five years or so, give or take a year. I found myself living three miles away from American Top Team in Coconut Creek.  And the world of Jiu Jitsu and MMA opened up for me. Training under Ricardo Liborio, I learned things as a white belt I thought were forbidden. But nothing was with Libo, heel hooks in gi? Sure no problem. Moving over from the Gracie mindset to the more aggressive Carlson Gracie lineage was an eye opener. Pressure passing, athleticism, the little tweaks that make Jiu Jitsu more effective, things we thought were “Secret Techniques”, under Ricardo Liborio were taught freely to make us better Lutadores.

During this time I was taking privates under Renato Tavares, he was taking a trip to Brazil, and introduced me to my current BJJ Coach, Emyr “Shark” Bussade. When you take a year’s worth of private instruction you create a bond. He’s my Brother, my family, and all the pieces and parts that go with it. We laugh, we fight with each other, get angry, but we always come back to family. Shark awarded me my Blue, with my MMA Coach Danillo “Indio” Villeforte. Shark also awarded me my Purple Belt in 2015.  Great memories at Coconut Creek.

Fast forward ten years, I’ve moved, two or three times, trained at some great Gyms, “Academy of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu” in Chatsworth, “4SBJJ”, “Primal BJJ” both in San Diego, I tried to keep training, but life gets in the way. I partially tore my Labrum in my right shoulder, have terrible lower back issues, and shoulders pop out when I roll. But when I can, I go back to BJJ. I was a Blue Belt for 7 years. Shark used to joke, you’ll die a Blue Belt. Which to this day he keeps telling me he wished he never said that and feels guilty.

Three years ago I had a Heart Attack. On the mats, riding in back control of my partner about to slap on a Rear Naked Choke. I want to say I was scared when it was happening, but really I was calm. Other than I couldn’t catch my breath, being nauseous, dizzy, and music playing was starting to sound funny. Every time I opened up my eyes, it was tunnel vision. All I kept thinking of were my kids, both in College. And if I did enough to give them the tools to thrive. I found what I loved, and let it kill me. Almost. Heart blockage was cleared and a stent put in, and I thought I’d be 100%. Silly me. The medicine I’m on severely limits my cardio and energy. It takes months and months to be able to roll rounds again, building myself up. And one of the reasons why I took almost two years off after receiving my Purple Belt. In hindsight it was the wrong thing to do.

So here we are now, I’m almost Fifty years old.  I’m 215lbs, lightest I’ve ever been in decades.   Everything hurts, knees, elbows, shoulders, back, but it’s not a debilitating pain, more you lived a full life and shit wears out type of pain. And that’s what this blog is going to be about. Grappling, living with the highs and lows of BJJ, and getting fucking old. What I have had to change in my game to use less energy, drilling a slower more deliberate game. Rather the flashy new modern game like my Son plays and other early twenties competitors. That’s the other high I want to mention. My Son made Blue in ten months, then won his first Gold medal as a Blue at the IBJJF Miami Open. He tore through the circuit. Nothing made me more proud than seeing him competing and winning. At the end of the day, we all want to leave a mark on this world before we end our days. That’s what Jiu Jitsu has done for me. Jiu Jitsu is life.  This is the continuation of my journey.

“Jiu Jitsu is a circle” Master Ricardo Liborio.

Like STDs, Advertising has been a health threat ever since people started screwing each other. But the ads that our parents, grandparents, and their parents were subjected to, were a whole other order of magnitude of threatening to their health.

Some of these are authentic ads, some are photoshops. Can you tell the difference? More importantly, what does it say about our health industry over the years that separating the two isn’t so easy?

Manny Pacquiao’s Wife Murdered By Fake News

0

The Philippines have been at the center of a lot of controversy involving violence and crime lately, with opinions divided on the tactics of far-right President Rodrigo Duterte in his efforts to combat the drug trade. And while crime of all sorts is high in the country, human rights advocates and political opponents condemn the policies of government-sanctioned killings.

In support of those policies has been featherweight champion boxer-turned Senator and conservative spokesman, Manny Pacquiao, whose wife has now become the victim of a possibly drug-related killing.

Jinkee Jamora-Pacquiao, 38, recently retired from her own political career. She was the mother of five children with the boxing star.

According to police, Jinkee was found in her car “bleeding, and crying for help” after having been shot three times in the chest by currently unknown assailants. A bystander drove her to the hospital where –despite the efforts of physicians– she expired.

Except she didn’t.

The story is a complete hoax. However, within a few hours it had been shared over 20,000 times on social media, and had even prompted comment and condolences from notable persons in the Philippines. The article posted to “news-tv.co.uk” included a fake quote from Pacquiao himself, which lent it some credibility.

So in case you were wondering, Pac-Man’s wife is still alive. And if this article appeared in your social media news feed, please take the time to correct the individual who shared it and admonish them for spreading fake news.

Aside from Magic Pants™ and ineffective joint manipulations, that is?

Staff writer Holy Moment breaks it down in a new video for the new year.  In his words, “an individual fighter is forged by his training, which in turn is dictated by the style he practices.  To say style doesn’t matter is to say training doesn’t matter, something I’m sure nobody reading this would agree with.”

Social Media BS: “Mommyjacking”

0

There’s a lot of hostility towards women on the Internet: from unsolicited pictures of a stranger’s genitals, to outright threats of rape for any woman that speaks out against inequality. But what’s worse is that women aren’t just on the receiving end of hostility from the opposite sex; all too often they’re directing it at their own.

Mommyjacking is a form of harassment by women of all ages, directed at young women participating on social media. The term comes from having a post about a life event –from the trivial to the significant– “hijacked” by a mom who can’t seem to understand that there’s life outside of motherhood. It ranges from the clueless or passive-aggressive rudeness caused by failing to realize that children aren’t a part of everyone’s lives (and that’s okay), to ridiculous condescension and outright hostility for anyone who decides to do anything with their life other than reproducing. Here are some examples:

Motherhood is challenging, but it’s certainly not the most difficult job in the world. If it were, Earth wouldn’t be closing in on a population of ten billion like a freight train headed downhill, off the rails, on fire, towards a nuclear reactor.

In the former Soviet union.

And it shouldn’t need to be stated that it’s perfectly fine for women to choose not to have children, to pursue things in their lives as an independent Human being, and not simply a walking incubator.

As BS goes, we’ll admit that Mommyjacking is not exactly on the level of Fake News, Pseudoscience, Alternative Medicine, or curling in the squat rack; but it’s still a shitty thing to do. And at Bullshido, we trying to make the world a little less shitty every day.

These States Allow Religious Exemption for Killing Children

0

Freedom of Religion is an amazing thing. Throughout history, wherever it has been the law of the land, culture has flourished and people have prospered. But there have always been points at which a belief in the supernatural comes into conflict with the realities of the natural world. And when the balance of power is in the hands of people who choose belief over evidence, those points can be deadly.

Such is the case when Faith comes into conflict with Medicine and a child is involved. It is assumed that parents always have the best interests of their children in mind, but for some parents those interests are secondary to upholding a system of belief. This causes them to seek miracles over medicine, prayer over prescriptions, and ultimately– Heaven over help.

And in several places in the United States, this practice is upheld by law.

The following states have laws on the books that exempt parents from responsibility for the deaths of their children due to opting for treatment based on religious belief rather than evidence-based-medicine:

Map of USA States With Medical Exemptions from Healthcare
In a rational world, this entire map would be a single color

State by state:

ARKANSAS – defense to capital murder:

It shall be an affirmative defense to any prosecution for capital murder arising from the failure of the parent, guardian, or person standing in loco parentis to provide specified medical or surgical treatment, that the parent, guardian, or person standing in loco parentis relied solely on spiritual treatment through prayer in accordance with the tenets and practices of an established church or religious denomination of which he is a member. Arkansas Code §5-10-101(a)(9)(B)

IDAHO – defenses to criminal injury to children, nonsupport and manslaughter

The practice of a parent or guardian who chooses for his/her child treatment by prayer or spiritual means alone shall not for that reason alone be construed to have violated the duty of care to such child. Idaho Code §18-1501(4) The practice of a parent or guardian who chooses for his child treatment by prayer or spiritual means alone shall not for that reason alone be construed to be a violation of the duty of care to such child. Idaho Code §18-401(2)

IOWA – defense to felony child endangerment and manslaughter

The failure of a parent, guardian or person having custody or control over a child to provide specific medical treatment shall not for that reason alone be considered willful deprivation of health care if the person can show that such treatment would conflict with the tenets and practice of a recognized religious denomination of which the person is an adherent or member. Iowa Code §726.6(d)

LOUISIANA – defense to criminal neglect, cruelty to children and manslaughter; also privilege

The providing of treatment by a parent or tutor in accordance with the tenets of a well-recognized religious method of healing, in lieu of medical treatment, shall not for that reason alone be considered to be criminally negligent mistreatment or neglect of a child. The provisions of this section shall be an affirmative defense to prosecution for the offense of cruelty to juveniles. Louisiana Revised Statutes §14:93(b) In any proceeding concerning the abuse or neglect or sexual abuse of a child or the cause of such condition, evidence may not be excluded on any ground of privilege, except in the case of communications between an attorney and his client or between a priest, rabbi, duly ordained minister or Christian Science practitioner and his communicant. Louisiana Revised Statutes §14:403(b)(5)

MISSISSIPPI – defense to contributing to the neglect or delinquency of a child and manslaughter

Mississippi’s definition of contributing to the neglect or delinquency of a child at Miss. Code §97-5-39 uses the civil definition of neglect at §43-21-105(l)(i), which includes a religious exemption. Mississippi Code §97-5-39 Mississippi’s definition of manslaughter at Miss. Code §97-3-29 requires the prosecutor to prove the defendant was engaged in the perpetration of a misdemeanor. When parents deprive a child of lifesaving medical care, the prosecutor would have to charge neglect to prove manslaughter

VIRGINIA – defense to criminal child abuse and neglect, manslaughter, and failing to secure medical attention for an injured child

Any parent, guardian or other person having care, custody, or control of a minor child who in good faith is under treatment solely by spiritual means through prayer in accordance with the tenets and practices of a recognized church or religious denomination shall not, for that reason alone, be considered to have criminally abused or neglected the child. Virginia Code §18.2-371.1(C)

WASHINGTON – defense to criminal mistreatment and second-degree murder

It is the intent of the legislature that a person who, in good faith, is furnished Christian Science treatment by a duly accredited Christian Science practitioner in lieu of medical care is not considered deprived of medically necessary health care or abandoned. Revised Code of Washington §9A.42.005

These are only the states that include exemptions for children dying due to their parents seeking supernatural treatments such as prayer, rather than seeking medical attention from qualified physicians. Many other states include provisions to cover faith-related causes of Child Endangerment and Neglect:

ALABAMA – defense to child endangerment

A person does not commit an offense under section 13A-13-14 or this section for the sole reason he provides a child under the age of 19 years or a dependent spouse with remedial treatment by spiritual means alone in accordance with the tenets and practices of a recognized church or religious denomination by a duly accredited practitioner thereof in lieu of medical treatment. Alabama Code §13A-13-6(b)

ALASKA – defense to nonsupport

There is no failure to provide medical attention to a child if the child is provided treatment solely by spiritual means through prayer in accordance with the tenets and practices of a recognized church or religious denomination by an accredited practitioner of the church or denomination. Alaska Statutes §11.51.120

There are more. In fact, 38 states have exemptions for Child Abuse due to religious reasons. 47 -all but three- states have religious exemptions for vaccination.

Some may argue that there’s a difference between allowing a child to die and deliberately killing a child. This distinction, we argue, is bullshit. When you have responsibility for a life that is both physically and legally helpless without you, every choice you make in their care is an act of volition –even choosing to do nothing, or prayer, which are effectively the same thing.

The Mixed Martial Arts Athletes Association Goes Live

0

The sport of Mixed Martial Arts now has union representation. A group of fighters, including Georges St. Pierre, and Tim Kennedy, have come together to advocate for better pay and benefits for those who step into the cage.

When the sport was in its infancy in the 1990’s, compensation for fighters varied wildly from promotion to promotion, ranging from six-figure purses, to paying for your own ambulance ride. As the sport grew in popularity, eventually to eclipse Boxing, fighters and fans started asking why the purses didn’t expand along at the same rate.

More recently, the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s Reebok deal –which prohibited fighters from displaying sponsorship logos on their fight apparel in favor of exclusively-branded Reebok gear– cost them a valuable source of income that for many, helped support their full time participation in the sport. (Bullshido itself has sponsored several fighters, including most notably Joe Lauzon in his first UFC fight against Jens Pulver.)

So it was natural, almost logical, that a union would form to break the rear-naked chokehold that Zuffa (the UFC’s parent company) has on fighter pay and compensation. The question remains, however, if this attempt by the MM-triple-A will be effective in its purpose. Will other fighters flock to their standard? Will Zuffa and other players make moves to break the union before it can take root? Will Dana White call out the Pinkertons?

It’s an interesting time to be a fan of the business of MMA

The MM-Triple-A. Or MM3A. Or MM(A^3). Whatever, it's a thing now
