As for the OP; yes, I think disarms work. My experience with disarms seems to agree with what was said in the video. I use disarms when crashing in on the opponent or smothering their strikes or any time range is close and me and the opponent get entangled. I find some disarms more appropriate for sparring than others, I have a few go to disarms that I usually fall into while sparring. My current instructor says don't attempt to "get" a disarm but take it if the opponent leaves an opening.
