    Female Equivalent of "Sifu"?

    Hey CMAers,

For those of you in arts that use titles such as Sifu and Sigung, which I understand translate to Father and Grandfather, do you use a separate title to refer to an female instructor?

I've heard that too, but I also heard that means "Sifu's wife".

It might be a case of semantics here, but if I walked into a martial arts school in America, owned and operated by a female, and said "Hi, you must me the instructer's wife" I would expect to be punched.

Please elborate. Correct according to whom?

The reason I ask is the Google-fu did before posing the question did not show a clear conseus one way or another.

Just as a female instructor might be offended that if someone assumed she was the instructor's wife, I imagine she may be equally offended if I walked up to her and said "Hello sir, would you please teach me your kung-fu".

I am trying to get a sense if one is used more widely than the other. I am especially interest which titles are actually used in China, if any.

I do know of one Wing Chun lady in Hong Kong who refered to herself "Madame" as opposed to "Master".

I know you are looking for a Chinese term but I do not know of one.

I was told both Sifu as universal or Simo but only if there has to be a distinction.

I'm sorry, did you just ask a question in order to have an argument about the answer?

in my experience, we use sifu to refer to either male or female teachers, and simo only to refer to sifu's wife. i cannot say if that is "correct", however.
