Wu goes Kung Fu in SU

Five stewards needed to restrain Kung Fu enthusiast when a dispute over bar prices led to Shaolin style combat

A student who attended a martial arts society social has been arrested and charged with common assault after allegedly performing ‘Kung-Fu’ moves on Crowd Safety, University Security staff and Police Officers. Mr. Wu, a first-year science student, recalls nothing of the incident before waking the following morning in a Police cell and being charged with three counts of ABH. The offences were later lowered to common assault in court.

At approximately 11:40pm on Thursday 31 October, Wu was attending a society social at the Halloween Ball in the Students’ Union. Drinking games were played in order to initiate new members of the society. Mr. Wu confessed he was not used to drinking large amounts and quickly became severly intoxicated. Mr. Wu then reportedly attempted to pay £1.50 for a round of drinks and reacted aggressively when informed this wouldn’t cover the £4.50 cost of the order. One student who attended the incident stated: “He was standing by the bar and acting in an aggressive manor. It was obvious the guy was not going to take ‘no’ for an answer.”

Due to his agitated state, Mr Wu was asked to leave the premises and when he refused, he was physically escorted to the bottom of the Union South ramp where he was released. It was then that Wu insisted on re-entry to the event. One second-year witness stated: “He kept moving his hands in a ‘Kung-fu’ fashion and staggering slightly. He looked a little like Bruce Lee after a couple of pints of absinth.”

It is alleged that he subsequently punched a member of Crowd Safety before being restrained on the floor. “I vaguely remember being thrown to the floor and having five or six people jumping on me. I just can’t remember hitting anyone,” admitted Wu. One student claims Wu shouted threats at the staff in attendance, saying he would, “Pound their faces into the floor and break their necks” before claiming that he “could take them all on.”

Campus Security were called and suggestions made that they should ‘aim their cameras’ at the event, although neither the Union, nor the University, has been able to provide footage of the incident when requested by the Police or Mr. Wu’s solicitor. When Warwick Security arrived, it is claimed that Wu again became violent and further restraint was required. Eventually the police were called and the students wallet and library card were removed from his person. “This is common practise,” explained Greg Jones. “We need to identify the offender so as to take appropriate action against them.”

Greg Jones continued: “Any of the stewards working at the Union are also qualified to work as doormen at any club in Leamington or Coventry. We take the safety of our staff very seriously.”
