    Libertarianism and Anti-Vax

So I currently reside in a nation that socialist. Part of that socialism is requiring that our children be vaccinated. Now we are having a measles outbreak, and my vaccinated daughter, who really needs to buy a lottery ticket(she was one of less than 25 children in the world to have contracted rheumatic fever under the age of 3) some day, won the measles lottery and is one of the minority who still gets it even though she is up to date on her vaccinations.

So there are two primary groups of anti-vaxers here. The religious nuts who don't believe in the state and thus refuse to accept any help from them, and the libertarian nuts who believe that their personal liberties trump those of other people and state imposed vaccination schedules. So this goes out to the Libertarians here, how do you view the vaccination? Can you even truly be a Libertarian and believe in mandatory vaccination?

It's the same argument as abortion, from where I stand. Your children are in your charge, but they are separate people, with all of their human rights intact. You should not be allowed to deprive them of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness by not getting them vacced. It's pretty much that simple.

Anti-vaxxers deserve a sledgehammer to the taint. I hope your daughter is okay.

Good news. Being that 1% with two jabs of MMR that can still contract measles does mean, at least in her case, that it isn't as severe. Her body has a head start on fighting it off.

My wife was the regional epidemiologist for a while. She knows about that stuff. I tend to advise her on stuff that I know and she doesn't, and it goes the other way as well. Before her, I generally didn't care about vaccinations much. It just didn't effect me, I thought. Besides the fact that I had been vaccinated to the moon and back by the military when we got stationed in Okinawa.

Well, after hearing my wife talk about vaccinations and all of the issues surrounding them, I am very pro vax. My guess is that most guys (specifically) who are libertarians and anti-vax are just ignorant about the issues like I was.
