    Shinken shobu! (aka the deadly)

It's a few days I'm home with some back pain, and I spend time watching judo videos on youtube.

I found by chance some videos about "shinken shobu" (self defence in the streets) and atemi (striking) in judo, by two italian senseis that I (indirectly) know.

I'll put then here for reference because I think there is some curiosity about judo self defence and atemi, they look very much like woman self defence or similar.

The first batch of videos are by Alfredo Vismara, a very famous judoka with a good agonistic career when he was young. He is very famous in Italy, and he is a ne-waza (ground fighting) specialist.
He even wrote a book on ne-waza:

    Here are the videos:

These next three are specifically about atemi (striking) and kyusho (vital points), the idea is that judo atemi are always aimed at vital points.
    Same instructor.

This is another serie made mostly by an italian instructor. These sequences look very much like variations on the goshin jutsu.
Incidentially when I had to study the kodokan goshin jutsu he was one of our federal instructors.

Shinken shobu is not self defense.

In context, it is a fight to death or serious maiming at least.

Boxing or muy Thai would be better than bad krotty punching...

Yeah I think the so-called traditional kodokan Judo Association the u.s. is hawking these things now is the Lost self-defensive Judo or some similar nonsense.

I think it's a good example of what Judo atemi /shinken sbobu are, but that Judo atemi are not very good (lack of aliveness, stance, and overall of the concept of a striking range).

As to the meaning of shinken shobu, I think that more or less is what we would call self defense (I understand that it means a deadly fight, but then you use these "deadly" techniques only in a situation of self defense).

The words literally mean "match with real swords". In modern Japanese, it can refer to any serious situation, unrelated to physical fighting. The kyokoshin-kan karate guys use the term to refer to a certain kind of match with fewer rules than normal, i.e. they let you punch the other guy in the face. Seems a little watered down to me, but there you are.

Thanks, I was hoping you would chime in from the kendo point of view.

It's Italian drama is what it is, IMO, regardless of modern Japanese usage.

    Shinken shobu...jeez...

To paraphrase: Neil says,"Swords at Dawn or you're little Bitches."

This was a cool piece of info.
