If your partner does heel hooks, then you should use heel hooks too.

Omega, about like this, at around 2:00?
No, not really. That "counter" looks like it came out of ibjjf necessity.

Stuff like this is why tournaments consider straight ankles - "dangerous" - people spaz out and break their own legs.

Trying to pull the grip off with your hands is also not particularly good technique. That will buy you time, but it won't actually get you out of the position.

Part of the problem with your query is that there are approximately four thousand leglocking positions (ashi, double outside ashi, 4/11, split, knee knot, the list goes on for ever), and the exact escape for a straight ankle is going to very depending on which one it is. IN GENERAL, you want to pummel your legs to the inside of his legs. I'm trying to find videos of leg pummeling on youtube, but I'm coming up dry.

I am worried that your opponent is doing heel hooks on you. It doesn't sound like you guys are super well-studied in leg attacks, and unlike the straight ankle, heel hooks ARE pretty dangerous.
Couldn't concur more. Any video on what he does? And what rank are you?

BJJ blue belt, CSW level 2. Did some Sambo for a while too.
My most recent BJJ gym was very leglock-heavy.

I meant the OP, but thanks for letting me know. I was looking at some video of a seminar I taught a few years ago. I found a few things he could use but nothing for on the side of basics.

I'll just put this here. There may be a few things the OP can use. Listen to when the other instructor talks about putting on the boot:

Aaron Fields out in Seattle; I lived there for a year. I've taken one or two seminars with Mark Tripp out here in MI as well.

What's sambo? Isn't that some type of South American dance?

Oh cool. I do the occasional class with Mark and we've co-hosted some events together. I'm having Vlad Koulikov out at my place in Southfield next weekend and if you've got time you should come check him out
