    Yamaji Dojo Philip Yang

About 12 years ago I practiced traditional Japanese Jujutsu and made it to green belt. I am thinking of starting back up again and was curious about a local instructor that has popped up in my area.

I took notice of his school when they hosted Royce Gracie in 2012. I think they opened doors in 2010. Prior to this I never heard of him so I am wondering if his 8th degree is legit (local martial artists question an 8th degree at his age being early 40's).

His instructors are not listed anywhere that I can find. Who graded him? What dates did he get is black belt, his 1st degree, his 2nd degree ect.

I want to know if this guy is legit or not.

His website shows they offer Jujutsu as well as daito ryu aikijujutsu. I emailed Diato Ryu Canada's organizing body and they never heard of the guy. I also noticed they have gotten away from using the aikijujutsu lately to advertise and mostly advertise jujutsu as their program. Aiki can still be found on their website though and their Facebook page ends with /DaitoRyuAikijujutsu/. Are these styles the same thing?

His gym offers kickboxing and I am curious about his credentials in this.

His gym also offers MMA and this is a red flag to me being that he is from a traditional background. I would guess that he is just trying to cash in on the market (whatever, gotta pay the bills..).

I'm not saying he isn't all that his says he is. I am just curious to see if he is legit. I trained and some fishy schools in the past and don't want to get burned again.

    Thanks.

You are correct in that the information on the Kickboxing http://www.yamaji.ca/kickboxing/ is very slim and I see no references to MMA on the http://www.yamaji.ca site. I assume that claim is being made on the Bookface thingy?

There is some info on the "chief instructor" here http://www.yamaji.ca/instructors/ which lists

I don't mean to sound bitter, cold, or cruel, but I am, so that's how it comes out.

NCCP is legit coaching credentials if he has them, and they are up to date. The coach training I have had in Judo is a replacement/extension of NCCP.

So here is where you can check his NCCP training...if you can get his NCCP/CC#. You would have to ask him. If he doesn't know what it is, or won't supply it, red flag...
