My classmate goes to a Mcdojo...

So yesterday at school a girl in one of my classes and I ended up talking about martial arts. She then told me that she(she's 17 by the way) is a 3rd degree black belt in Taekwondo at a WTF school.

Today I brought up the signs of a mcdojo with her. I knew this school was because I had tried a class back in 2015:

-A black belt could be reached in two years

-Sparring could not be done until several months at green or blue belt, and it was only olympic sparring(the instructor also taught judo classes, but still).

-Self defense included unrealistic one steps. The one i learned when trying the class was one person got in a low stance holding a knife, lunged at the defender, and held still while the defender unleashed a snap kick to the solar plexus and a series of chambered punches to the face. Would definitely get someone killed.

My friend has an interest in self defense but didn't seem to get what i was saying. I showed her some of the signs of a Mcdojo in a book i had with me. which was in a book i had, but she said her school isn't like that since she knows all the forms, all the (compliant and unrealistic) techniques, has even helped teach and took some of the judo classes. But seriously, a 3rd degree at 17!? Even if she has been training since she was at least 8(she took two years off also)

Anyway what do you guys think, oh and if you're wondering the school looks very different from what the site shows. Much smaller.

In short I think you posted this in the wrong forum. This belongs in YMAS, not in MABS, as it is not so much an investigation into actual fraud as it is a drive by at WTF which has been dealt with ad nauseum already.

This would make a MABS thread if a specific school or claims or instructor was listed and linked.

    As is you are correct.

At 17 she's too young to have his 3rd dan recognized by the WTF. She is probably a junior 3rd gup (junior degree). Other than that, it seems an ordinary WTF TKD school.

Poor training like most tkd doesn't necessarily make it a Mcdojo. That's more to do with business practices and such. The instructor may very well be more interested in passing on his tkd than making money, even if it is bad tkd. your friend should just go to judo more often, and see if you can convince her to try out some of the full contact striking in your area.

Seems like just standard operating procedure for WTF. As far as that blackbelts age, the real question is can she practice at a blackbelt level?? I have seen plenty of fat 50 year old bb's in TKD that couldn't kick at even waist height.

    Out of bounds. She's 17.

You'll understand when you have daughters.
