    The Sky is Falling

16 Year Old Blue Belt is a Head Instructor of Gracie Academy in Mississippi
    http://www.bjjee.com/featured/16-yea...n-mississippi/

here is a video of him(I am assuming) competing 5 years ago.

Not that an old video tells you anything.

So he is a certified Gracie Jiu-jitsu Instructor from the Gracie Academy in Torrance, CA.

I am sure a whole bunch of people are going to be up in arms about this in the community. Should be interesting to see the reactions.

Can't figure what he needs BJJ for, he is a Shaolin Kempo Karate Black Belt.

I can't decide if I give a **** about this or not. I wouldn't train under a 16 year old but if people want to, whatever.

The kid has been training a long time, I'm sure. He's probably better than his rank.

Aside from the age, the other issue is that he's a blue belt. Again, I wouldn't train under a blue belt. Not today with all the black belts available. But my first jiu jitsu instructor was a blue belt. That was back when black belts were scarce. I learned a lot from him.

So, I guess I have a hard time caring about this.

No, the sky is not falling. The drive for standards in the martial arts never came from the Gracie family or from Brazilian Jiujitsu. It came from us the entire time. We assumed their values and standards were in line with ours and projected our own motivations onto their behaviors. We mistook fighting prowess for ethics in business, the arts and life. It's time to stop, take a deep breath, put our feelings aside, and ask ourselves if the Brazilian Jiujitsu leadership really believes what we believe. It's time to stop defending these frauds. Bullies (b) take aim at those they see as beneath them. Bullies (B) take aim at all who deserve it. Are we Bullies? Or just bullies?

Torches are on sale now for the low price of $400, matches for $2,000.

This is pretty outrageous, and I honestly feel bad for the kid. He had this ego instilled, and these thoughts that he should be running a school put in his head.

This is a problem when a premium is taught on technical knowledge to teach, and not on the ability to develop performance in your students. This kid may know how to do a sweep and an armbar, but when a 200lb dude who wrestled in college steps in the class, he's not going to be equipped to deal with him, let alone teach someone else in his class to deal with his size and base.

In years past, blue and purple belts might have run their own gyms, but under the umbrella and supervision of their black belt instructor who would officiate the ranks. But to teach in another state, with the credentials of "technical blue belt" is just shameful, and will be the undoing of the art we hold dear. This is the same line of thinking that has led to child black belts in Karate and TKD. Performance is what set BJJ apart from the riff raff, but now being able to execute technique on compliant uke's in an internet web promotional video is the gold standard for some.

    Shameful.

Good on the kid for realizing his goal. That is impressive, and I know at 16 I was too busy learning how to do jiu jitsu then worrying about opening my own academy ;)

But shame on Rener Gracie for encouraging an unqualified kid to do something he's unprepared for.
