5 Stripes per Belt in BJJ?

Hi. I just started training BJJ. And I was always under the impression that you normally rank up to 4 stripes before progressing to the next rank in belt. (4 stripes white then becomes blue; 4 stripes blue then becomes purple; etc.)

However, I just found out that the school I'm training at goes up to 5 stripes per belt. Is this normal? I've just never heard about 5 stripes until this. Does anyone else's school use the 5 stripes system of ranking?

With regards to BJJ, I have never heard of anything beyond four stripes per belt.

Ugh, belts. Just throw the whole thing out.

Back on topic, I've never seen anyone with 5 stripes, except for one guy at the last BJJ place I trained. He had a blue belt with 5 stripes on it, and a purple belt hidden in his bag.

It's 4 stripes per belt, never heard of anyone using 5.

What's the name of this place?

I know of 3 schools that use 5. We use 5 but I'm weird.

(Does anybody remember when it was just three belts colors?)

i think that as a fresh beginner, the *last* thing you should be worried about is how many stripes your gym uses on their belts. i mean, really? are you there to learn or to get some fancy flair for your waist?

I think its a fair question. Something out of the ordinary can be an indicator of something being up. In this case probally not so much.
