    1950 budo demonstration video

Here's a nice video of a budo demonstration that took place in 1950. I think it took place in France since it includes the founder of the French Federation of Judo. It features Judo, of course, as well as some weapons work and I think some Aikido.

It's a 59 year old demo. If you watch the old Rickson demos or Machado demos you see similar things. This isn't to impress people who practice the arts, they are meant to make laymen go "Wow! That's cool! I need to learn that.". With the amount of very good judo in France, I would say "Mission accomplished". You probably should watch these types of videos in the context in which they were made.

What was the stuff at the beginning? Before the little kid started throwing the man around.
It looked very aikidoesque. But they were clearly wearing judo clothes.

          Itsutsu no Kata.

Wondering why Kawaishi choose that kata...

Perhaps because it's short and has that mysterious Orient thing going for it.

I get so caught up in my little world of Judo (which mostly consists of me trying to master throws and keep developing my "explosive" newaza) that I sometimes forget how completely awesome it is. Thanks for posting that video.

As a side note Guillaume, who did the edit and music, is a fun guy to train with. He's an aikidoka so that might have influenced his choices about what to include in this edit. On the other hand I've seen another cut of the same demo and it wasn't wildly different to this one.

That kid's technique was spot on. The adult was compliant but was actually being thrown most of the time, which is quite impressive. So, again, where's the funny.

I hope those kids are old masters now. But, since they're French they probably discovered smoking and the art of mime the very next summer and quit Judo forever.
