    Taido

I did my best to make sure this is not a repeat topic.

Forgive me if I have failed at this somehow.

Has any one ever encountered any one who practiced this martial art? I'm not sure what to make of it.

Looks like XMA, or in other words, pretentious gymnastics. In fucking hakama.

I feel an urge to spit.

If I ever have to do 3 backflips and kick a poisonous sandwich out of someone's hands... I'm gonna be regretting not training in Taido :(

It looks like Japanese Capoeira (though I think Capeira looks more interesting and strategic). Unless they're claiming it to be an effective form of fighting I don't have a problem with it.

Also: if you've never attempted to hit someone with a cartwheel kick during sparring, just for shits and giggles, you are a huge stick in the mud.

                    That stuff is awesome.

I'd love to train in Taido or Shintaido.

Seriously. Who cares if it could be used in "the octagon"? It just looks like lots of fun to me man!

Don't know about that "Shintaido" though. Playing in a waterfall looks cool, but throwing a guy with "mind power"? I'm just not that gullible...

Great thunder of Thor! I like the part where Crudelli says it looks more like a theater workshop. He's absolutely right! In my college days, I was in a theater workshop doing the stretching and screaming! (What I did to pick up chicks...)

Sadly, it also reminds me of the mystical Bujinkan training I now avoid -- but even more so! Sakki tests from behind screens? Standing in freezing cold waterfalls? Emptying your mind to feel your partner's intention? Whoa.

                        As in Matrix/Keanu, "whoa."

                        But highly entertaining video!!!

Exactly. Some people want to learn to do cool stuff, get in shape, have fun, and learn some basic self-defense. Taido accomplishes that.

The school in Norcross, GA does demos at Atlanta area events from time to time and I have seen a couple. It seems that the gymnastic practice is more for physical development and self improvement, not as a means to cartwheel backflip someone to death. I read a Taido blog a while back by a black belt who seemed to share the same view. The showy stuff is not completly related to any self defense aspect. The demos did state that Taido was good for self defense, and they did show some basic karate striking as well as a bit of flashy kicking, but it was hard to gauge how much was show for the demo and how much was true self defense. The instructors leading the demo had a very tongue-in-cheek presentation for the self defense, so there was never any overarching aura of true deadliness in Taido, which was nice.

Interestingly enough, one of the Norcross instructors did compete in a few MMA matches in the early decade. His Sherdog lists him as 1-1, the loss by RNC and the win by "Submission", no indication of how.

                            I take it back.

I don't want to train Taido.

I want to date a Taido girl.

Wrong wrong wrong. If you really think cartwheel backfip kicks don't work in street self-defense, watch this and educate yourself a little:
