I've lived in Japan. Can you explain how Bussey handled daily expenses? Did Hatsumi sponsor him completely, feeding him, housing him, clothing him, providing for his every need? Even if he trained constantly and did something simple, like teaching English (going rate is roughly 20 - 30,000 yen, or roughly $25 per hour; it can be significantly more depending on the teacher's credentials, but a "regular" native speaker without university education/certification as a teacher wouldn't earn much more than that), he'd have to spend quite a bit of time traveling around to teach classes, in order to earn enough money to pay for training (I don't think Hatsumi lets folks train for free, and when I looked into going to their honbu dojo to train it was 10,000 yen (roughly $100 US at the time) for one class), food, lodging, and basic sundries.

And let's just ignore the issue of how long his visa lasted. I know that the US and Japan have reciprocal agreements and honor the passports of each other's governments, but I also know you can't just stay in Japan indefinitely without renewing your visa...

So being there for 2 years, with no job, sounds a little farfetched.

Not only that but after seeing them both in action up close and personal Brandon says he has no doubt that Bussey would crush Hayes with ease in a real fight.
Hayes is at least a "couple" of years Bussey's senior, Bussey was always quite fit, and both of them training under the same teacher doesn't necessarily mean they'd both be as good a fighter as the other. That being said, it's a bullshit comparison and means nothing whatsoever. I have a few acquaintances who don't look too intimidating, but can scrap with the best of them. Without video proof of Bussey spanking Hayes, Brandon's opinion means dick.

And does anyone have a time line for when Bussey allegedly did this 2 year training stint in Japan? He was a ninjer in Omaha when he was still in his early to mid 20s... If he was already established as a ninjer in Fremont, NE (where his first ninja academy was prior to his move to Omaha), then he couldn't have been more than 17 - 18 when he went to Japan.

      Anybody?

You lived in Japan for two years? Okay, well I'm going to need to see a scan of your passport. I'll also need work records from whatever job YOU had. Or if you were in school then I'll need to see academic records of some sort. Did you also have a girlfriend? Well . . . doesn't really matter what you say. I'll need a notarized statement from your Ex before I'll believe it and even then she could be lying.

        Etc. . .

You see how annoying that shit gets? You're right. I'm sure that NONE of the guys who we now identify as being part of the Bujinkan movement were ever in Japan. And I'm also sure that none of the ever studied ninjutsu. Or that their names are really Hayes, Hoban or Malmstrom.

I'm also sure that Japan doesn't even exist. I mean . . . I've never been there. You say you have but, again, I have no reason to believe that.

I just e-mailed Brandon to see what his methadology was for establishing the 2 year figure. I'll let you know what he says when he writes back.

P.S. Thanks for being a dick.

Nope. Three years, nine months; Jan 1999 through Sep 2002.

I'd be happy to scan the necessary documents and send them via email to Sam. I was then (and am now) active duty Army. I was assigned to HHC, 17th ASG, and worked with the USARJ OSJA.

Did you also have a girlfriend?
            Nope. Happily married, two kids.

You see how annoying that shit gets?
The necessity of such inquiries are obvious. If claims are made, supporting evidence ought to be on the back burner, ready for presentation should someone expect proof. That's the foundational basis of Western legal, scientific, and philosophical thought.

I'm not claiming that I trained day and night for years at a stretch in a foreign country when I was either not quite out of, or just barely past, my teenage years. I'm not the one whose training history lacks full disclosure. I'm not the one seeking legitimacy for my training methods or history. He is.

You're right. I'm sure that NONE of the guys who we now identify as being part of the Bujinkan movement were ever in Japan.
I never said that. For that matter, I didn't say Bussey wasn't in Japan, either. What I did say was that from sources I have access to, he wasn't there any more than 2 weeks. That's just about 102 weeks shy of the two year mark you mentioned.

And I'm also sure that none of the ever studied ninjutsu. Or that their names are really Hayes, Hoban or Malmstrom.

I'm also sure that Japan doesn't even exist. I mean . . . I've never been there. You say you have but, again, I have no reason to believe that.

Whatever. Grow up. I'm sorry to tarnish your boyhood hero's image, but the facts remain as they are... I was enamored of the ninja mystique when I was young, and I went so far as to "interview" at Bussey's Arbor Street school in Omaha (before he moved to the much larger and more visible location on 72nd, about 2 blocks south of 72nd and Dodge). I really, really, really wanted to train in what I thought, at that time, was serious and legitimate martial arts.

Then I had my eyes opened to real training, and to the reality of what "Robert Bussey's Ninja Academy" really was. I had the chance to interact with more than enough of his students, his senior students, including his "uchi deshi" as well.

In the end, Bussey got tossed in the ninja dust bin along with Mike Stone, that guy from the American Ninja movies, and Sho Kosugi. Another '80s flash-in-the-pan trying to make a buck. Nothing more.

Sorry, Sam, but that one was mine if it was referencing my quote. If someone's calling me a dick, I want to take credit for it.

You can tell a lot about man's character by his friends, but you can tell more about his character by the nature of his enemies...

Last I checked it was a simple part of social skills to be polite and respectful. We're not friends. I don't know you. If we were then it would be more appropriate for you to fuck with me. And maybe you're a really cool guy. But for now we don't know each other and that's all the more reason to continue to show respect.

It seems that all too often people think that the normal rules of human interaction that exist in person don't apply to the Internet. Huh? As far as I'm concerned a human being exists behind the keyboard on the other side and I have to act accordingly.

Sho Kosugi is still, and always will be, very cool.

Of course not. I have nothing to hide. Bussey, however, may. Hence, full disclosure is the only solution.

Exactly. You have yet to earn respect of any kind, from anyone. If/when you do, you'll get my respect. I don't give respect "just 'cuz." It's either earned, or it isn't.

And before you continue to equate politeness with respect, please show me where, by quote, I was rude in anything I've said. Please don't mistake brutal honesty and directness with rudeness, either.

See above. You'll get the minimum courtesy anyone else I neither know, nor have reason to be respectful of, gets. Nothing more. You don't "deserve" anything. I have yet to call names, unlike you. If anyone owes an apology, it would be you.

Fine. Good for you. When you come down off your high horse, down here with us common folks, you'll find we're not big supporters of obsequious displays of fandom. You came here refuting Bussey's questionability. You came here defending a man you admit to having a continuing hero worship of, beginning when you were quite young. You lack objectivity in your reporting. You fail to ask the hard questions and demand answers, instead relying solely on the testimony of others who share your opinions to act as supporting evidence for your claims.

Find me someone who absolutely loathes ninjas, ninjutsu, and Bussey himself, that verifies any claims Bussey's made, and you'll make me a believer without question. I'll publicly support his history myself with that kind of independent verification. But if the best you have are a bunch of fellow fanboys all saying Bussey's a badass that lived in Japan for an unspecified but long-term duration where he learned to be a ninja teacher, you've got a ways to go before your arguments are worth listening to.

This message board is disgusting. I am not speaking from a standpoint of being pro or con to Bussey, but rather a lack any real character among it's participants. It is not very often that I read a board that makes me wanna punch a motherfucker in the face. I mean I post a legitimate comment, and the answer I recieve is "shut up, noob". That is just fucking stupid. The fact is that these are sophmoric moronic excuses for a feeble attempt at intelligent communication.

Let me also say that I hope when you die, that you go to hell, but not just in the general waiting area of hell, but a special extra hot layer. I hope that Satan himself begins mercilessly pounding you in the ass with his firey cock and the only reply you can get to yours screams of intense agony is "Shut Up, Noob".

In conclusion, I say to you... go fuck your mother you dim witted pieces of shit. Motherfuckers like you shouldn't be allowed to use a keyboard.

I don't understand why you're taking Matt Stone's post with such hostility, most of it is common sense.

For any country, you would need to get a visa, and Japan, which has a reputation of being very strict as to who is admitted into the country and for how long, would be no exception. 2 Years is a long time, in most countries you would need to have applied and succeeded in getting residency or a work visa or something.

You're railing on someone who's merely showing perceived discrepancies in Bussey's bio and resorting to strawmen arguments to ignore these discrepancies.

If you go back in the thread, you'll see where a comment of mine was responded to like that.

Furthermore, if you want to bring religion in to this, bring it on asshole. I'm ready for you. It's people like you that display the ignorance many in this world have. You imply that because of something I said something like that, it displays a fundemental problem with all of Christian or religious belief. That's ignorant.

I began this with all intentions of being friendly. Ignorance makes me very unfriendly.

Well, I know that wasn't me. I don't say that to folks. If someone wants to demonstrate their "noob-ness," they can do just fine without my help.

Just pointing out that your comment flies in the face of the Christian ethic of coexistence. JC told his followers to turn the other cheek, didn't he? I surmised you were at least nominally Christian, as it'd be unlikely for a neo-Pagan, a Buddhist, or another non-Abrahamic religion's follower to wish an ass-fucking by Satan upon me.

No, just with your pursuit of established Christian ideals and recommended behavior. The fundamental problems with religious belief in general, and Christianity in particular, certainly don't need my assistance to be exposed.

                              That's ignorant.
No moreso than the opinions about Bussey's bad-assery as stated thus far in this thread.

Right. That's what I should have taken away from "In conclusion, I say to you... go fuck your mother you dim witted pieces of shit. Motherfuckers like you shouldn't be allowed to use a keyboard." My mistake.

You must spend a lot of time being unfriendly, then.
