It sounds like maybe Hatsumi isn't so innocent after all. The ninjers like to make out that he is dutifully passing on Takamatsu's claims in good faith and that if the whole thing was made up by Takamatsu, well then that's not Hatsumi's fault.

But if he's the one who knowingly lied about it being 34 generations old, then that's another matter.

Takatsumi's Ninpo was admitted for years before to be a collection of techniques he learned during his studies. He wanted to formalize it into a system to perserve it. At first Togakure-ryu was suppose to be Kukishin-ryu Ninpo as Takamatsu was a Kukishin-ryu Shihan. However, he never got permission from the Kuki family to use the name, thus it was called Togakure-ryu. A lot of this is in Takamatsu's Autobiography. The 34th grandmaster Ninja thing didn't come around till Hatsumi much later.

Evidence? I'm pretty sure that Takamatsu Sensei's "autobiography" isn't available publicly.
