One Spirit Martial Arts (OSMA) located in Herndon, VA is home to one of the better MMA schools in the Northern Virginia, Washington, DC Metro area. The school itself has been through many different iterations from a strictly TMA school (Shotokan, Taekwondo, Hapkido, etc.) to a full gamut MMA gym offering pretty much everything you would need to compete under one roof.
OSMA proudly boasts (and I emphisize that) the acclaim of being the new official headquarters of the Pedro Sauer Jiu-Jitsu Association. As of September 2006 Master Pedro Sauer, 7th Degree Red-Black Belt under Helio/Rickson Gracie, picked up camp in Salt Lake City and moved operations to OSMA. Master Sauer personally instructs the Monday through Thursday classes and travels to host seminars throughout the association on the weekends. The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes are top notch, Gracie Academy level, packed with step-by-step, technical run downs on every technique. This should be expected considering Master Sauer's highly acclaimed instruction (voted Most Sought After BJJ Instructor in a ADCC poll in 2005). Classes run an hour and half with 15 minutes of warm ups, 45 minutes of instruction, and 30 minutes of drilling and rolling. Thursdays we have the pleasure of hosting Maurice Allen, 8th Dan Judo master and head instructor of Sport Judo provide an hour long session on Judo takedowns to suppliment BJJ. The school also offers a Junior Jiu-Jitsu program 3X a week.
Other classes are an hour to two hours (muay Thai) long each with a dedicated instructor. There are no Jacks-of-all-trades that teach every class here. Many of the students do, however, cross train, which is encouraged for those wanting to join the local circuit. OSMA no longer offers Taekwondo or Hapkido but still has Judo, Aikido, and Kali. You will find that the student population is very friendly (leave your ego at the door) and helpful.
