"Betamax Columnists" - People Still Think Like This

I use the term "Betamax Columnist" like how Chris Rock talked about women who don't perform oral sex in this day and age: It's unbelievable that idiots like this still get press and free reign to spew the most ignorant bullshit:

    http://www.bostonherald.com/entertai...icleid=1097247

    Choice quotes from the column:

This form of fighting is all but bare-fisted, with less-than-gloves covering the knuckles. Anything including kicking goes. (I suppose eye-gouging might or might not be frowned upon).
Pardon my not swelling with civic pride over one of our own hitting the big-time at last for what amounts to legalized criminality, a plain barbarism that would tend to discourage a pedestal for this man.
And here's probably the most WTF part of all: He asserts that UFC has "peaked" and was sliding back into "bizarre fringe/niche status:"

Leave it to network television to be slow on the uptake, of course. Just when pugilism’s bastard sons, MMA and rival UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship), seemed to have peaked - whatever happened to Chuck Liddell? - and started a merciful decent from Next Big Thing back to bizarre fringe/niche status, along comes CBS to help resuscitate a beast better left gasping for breath.

I can respect his opinion that Kimbo is getting a stage more prematurely than perhaps other more veteran fighters, but to say that UFC/MMA is waning in popularity? That eye-gouging MIGHT be allowed?

The writer couldn't be bothered to do any research. I can't be bothered to care.

Journalism died the day CNN went on air. News became content and facts and integrity went out the window

      Get used to it.

You missed the best quote from the article:

That's a strange article on a site that has hosted Joe Lauzon's TUF blog as well as a few other intelligent articles on mixed martial arts.

Doubly strange, as it's a McClatchy Newspapers syndicated column from, I presume, the Miami Herald (thus the calling Kimbo "our own"), but the Boston Herald isn't a McClatchy property. Must have been a cranky sports editor with an axe to grind and a few extra bucks in budget for tomorrow.

Here's the original article from the Miami Herald in its entirety:

CBS is now legitimizing barbaric sport

MMA is bad. Severe risk of people getting fit and standing up for themselves. Ban it.
