ESPN: Boxing is the toughest sport in the world.

ESPN asked some experts to ranks sports according to several factors to determine which was the most difficult. Boxing ranked as the hardest and fishing as the easiest.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/sportSkills

We sized them up. We measured them, top to bottom. We've done our own Tale of the Tape, and we've come to a surprising conclusion. Pound for pound, the toughest sport in the world is . . .

    Boxing.

    The Sweet Science.

That's the sport that demands the most from the athletes who compete in it. It's harder than football, harder than baseball, harder than basketball, harder than hockey or soccer or cycling or skiing or fishing or billiards or any other of the 60 sports we rated.

In Page 2's Ultimate Degree of Difficulty Grid, boxing scores higher than them all.

But don't take our word for it. Take the word of our panel of experts, a group made up of sports scientists from the United States Olympic Committee, of academicians who study the science of muscles and movement, of a star two-sport athlete, and of journalists who spend their professional lives watching athletes succeed and fail.

They're the ones who told us that boxing is the most demanding sport -- and that fishing is the least demanding sport.

We identified 10 categories, or skills, that go into athleticism, and then asked our eight panelists to assign a number from 1 to 10 to the demands each sport makes of each of those 10 skills. By totalling and averaging their responses, we arrived at a degree-of-difficulty number for each sport on a 1 to 100 scale. That number places the difficulty of performing each sport in context with the other sports we rated.

On the grid below, click on each sortable category to find out how our 60 sports rank in each skill. A glossary key is included at the bottom of the grid that explains each category.

So put on the gloves, get in the ring and let the roundhouse hooks begin.

Interesting. I think the one that poses the greatest health risks as regards serious injury in the UK is actually competitive show jumping, although the fitness demands are obviously relatively low (but not minimal)

They need to be more specific, instead of the group they just have named "Martial Arts".

Not bad. Since MMA is a combination of three of the top 10 sports then you can take that for what its worth. Also if it was taken from the percpective of the Olympic level they have a slightly diferent view point. If professional MMA was a catatagory I still don't think it would have gotten the much repect from a broad panel of people due to the unfamiliarity many peolple have with the sport.

Hockey #2 thats nice. I miss playing hockey :(. Great sport more people should play it.

That's a joke right? Water polo is harder than rugby?

Edit: How can you even rate team sports on that scale, when different roles are specialised? Using American football as the most extreme example, the attributes of a quarterback and linesman are pretty fecking divergant.

Overall, probably. Boxing encompasses almost all aspects of fitness: cardiovascular, muscular, and mental. Running is like combining sprints and long distance running, workouts is basically calisthenics/weight training till failure, and mental as in consistently dealing with the threat of getting your face pounded in while still staying calm.

I also assume the article mentioned fishing as in sportfishing? Because commercial and rural fishing is the furthest thing from easy.

According to a recent report, most games result in at least one career ending injury. Amputations aren't uncommon.

Playing is a real crap shoot.

lol, extreme distance sports are so much harder than any contact sport in the world its a joke to even compare. Try a triple Ironman.

I read recently that the most dangerous sport in Australia in terms of fatalaties was rock fishing. So many of them get wiped off and carried away by freak waves.

A skater guy that I know brought this up to me yesterday. He was ticked that skateboarding was so low. I asked where boxing was. "Somewhere up there, but Rugby, boxing, football and soccer all beat it."

"It should be number 1," I said. I even explained why I thought it was tougher than MMA (longer matches, more cardio needed, many more punches land on your head in a match). He kept going on about how stupid the study was, and I kept saying it had to be made by idiots if boxing wasn't at the very top.

Of course, I now realize that skater-guy was retarded. He should have complained that BADMINTON beat skating, and that being dropped on his head repeatedly as a baby had made him ugly.

Conclusion: it's impossible to compare sports like this.

There is no mention of powerlifting, and what the fuck did they use to categorize "martial arts"? What's "weight lifting"? And bullriding being #42? Just due to the dangers alone, it should be considered among the top.

                              Stupid fuckers.
