Sorry, was in a shock there for a while. Yes, how should put this? I think that some of the individuals on that clip need to put down the fork before trying to master the knife.

This was "meh" at best. Weird I though Atienza had a good rep?

It definitely was the worst Atienza video I've seen...
Somebody should have worked harder for an official 2007 video, that's for sure... Looks like raw footage that is waiting for the editor...

The footwork looked fine, they were using good form with the deflections, there was some live drilling with padded sticks.......it wasn't impressive, but it's not like it was a bullshit-filled video.

The question is not wether the system itself is valid - what I find alarming is that some of those guys on that vid look like they could have a stroke walking up a flight of stairs. They ought to try to lose some flab before doing knife-o-bics and should have been told so before handing any cash over. Does gym insurance cover customers dropping dead mid-class?

A lot of people join martial arts classes precisely because they aren't in shape and would like to get in such. Walking through the doors of a decent class doesn't immeidately drop you to %7 bodyfat.

                      Precisely.

Besides, Tofudog, a "fat" guy gripping and mastering a decent blade vs. an "athletic" guy without a knife/knife-technique = most probably spilled athletic guts.

Not speaking out against losing fat, but a knife is/can be too big an advantage for body fat to play too big a role.

Doing it for any length of time should get you in shape, but these are "training groups". I don't know how many people in the video even attend a regular class, or how long they've been doing it. I lost something like 10 pounds the first month of my pekiti class.

Yeah, usually FMA guys look pretty conditioned. There is a Pekiti-tirsia class here - hopefully I get a chance to try it later in the year.

If you all would care to read the fine print on the original clip page, it says that these are training groups started on 2007... which could mean as much as 12 months experience, and as little as maybe 1. The Queens, NY group that trains out of PMA, which I'm a part of, we've been at it for maybe just a hair over 3 or 4 months. Many of us have FMA backgrounds, some don't. This might be true in some of the other training groups as well.

I'd also like everyone to count the total number of people in the clip. Then classify how many out of that total number of people would be considered "obese". I personally would count maybe 5 or 6... and out of how many... perhaps 60? Yet for some reason, everyone just stares at the larger people and goes wah wah wah.

And let me tell you about some of those larger people. I have far more respect for them than most seem to have here. Why? Because they're actually on the training floor, doing something physical and sweating it out, rather than just staying home in front of the TV with a bag of Cheetos and cans of Budweiser all night.

One of the guys in my training group... he started out around 300. With intense exercise (JKD several times a week, and inosanto-method kali) and a drastically changed diet, he lost weight. A lot of it. He's around 190-200 now, at 5'11, 6'. This was perhaps a nearly 2.5 year undertaking for him.

If the same groups appear in a video later in 2008, please compare and contrast the two. That's the true measure of whether any teaching is effective, in any discipline.

Anyway, just wanted to put my two cents in. Thanks for reading. Train hard, everyone.
