That vid is pretty sloppy execution, IMO. Obviously little to no grappling background for Mr Knife.

Against someone who can grapple, with a knife, 9/10 times I would just die, there is no deflecting the knife, it is out of range, then you're controlled, then you're stabbed. The 10th time I MIGHT KO'em or get control of their rear wrist enough for a disarm.

Really though, when you get attacked by a good grappler with a knife...you die.

Seeing the video I'd say that was the case of an experienced brawler with a knife attacking the equivalent of Mr. Bean on Rohypnol.

While I've never had to deal with a knife-rush personally, anyone who's coming that close to me, that fast tends to have to pry some portion of my anatomy out from between his teeth before he's past reach distance. I'm kind of twitchy.

I think Ryno pretty much nailed the key points. I would add that ideally I will have a weapon of some sort too, and if I have a knifeI'll probably try to vertical whip (I believe the term is buzzsaw in DBMA terminology) the attacking arm as I circle away (if they don't lead with the weapon hand, the cuts attack the closest hand or the face). If I have a stick or cane, I'd probably hold it towards the ends and strike forward with the area between my hands into the face repeatedly while zoning away. This grip is also good for blocking and striking the wrist. In theory, you'd want to use a regular grip to use the greater range, but a person attacking like that can close the gap so fast I'd probably go with the in close grip.
A while back, we were working with some of this stuff in a sparring type environment. From a STAB/2 on 1 type position, I passed the arm with an arm drag and got a takedown by grabbing the face of the fencing mask and shoving their head backwards and down as their body continued moving forward. While they were getting up I picked up one of the large fans on the floor as a weapon and lifted it above my head with a mighty kiai as if I was going to crush them with it. We stopped there and everyone had a good laugh.

If you want him to just lay there, feed him some grapes first. You'll get at least one good hit in with the fan before he reacts.
          Hey, it worked for me.

I am a 22 year veteran of NYC Corrections - most spent in a nast Brooklyn jail and Rikers Island.

I have 2 penetration scars from a very direct attack from a M.O. (mental observation) inmate from more than 10 years ago. Small on surface but deep in the body.

                .
Got my knife scars in Brooklyn, too. In my case, at a pay telephone at corner of Nostrand and Halsey, 1996.

Got a stab wound on my left thigh and a cut on the left calf. Guy rushed me while I was making a call. Cell phones are great things.

I've been in three other knife related events of note. Pretty much keeping away from the guy is the best defense IF you can move around. If you are trapped in a prison hallway(or in a phone booth like I was) not much you can really do except grapple his arm.

One of the other major knife attacks and some minor ones were during the height of the "Blood INvasion" of NYC. Initiates had to basically go up to random people and try and slash their face, and a favorite stalking ground was the Sutphin Blvd train station near where i lived in South Jamaica. I was attacked directly once(known as a member of a rival "gang"(not really a gang)), and several times others in groups I was in were attacked. Since the goal was purely to slash somebody in the face and mark them, the attacks weren't outside attempts to stab at vital organs, but it felt pretty scary at the time.

Been to a few of those Dog Brother's events, some various other combat training events(in and out of military).

I bought some of those Savoc fake knives a few years ago and some friends and I sometimes play with them. Haven't figured out anything fool proof yet.

"Die Less Often" is quite a thrill.

One defense is to be wary of who you let get close to you. At my most paranoid, I used to really never let anybody unknown(and few knowns) get close to me. Not really specifically for knife attacks, but even most street executions with pistols were from close up, conversation range, not drivebys(in nyc). That kind of proactive distancing is probably the best thing you can really do. As a prison guard, that option probably isn't available if you have to handle people as part of the job. Dangerous career.

On knife attacks in prison, some of you may find this interesting:

One guy on the videos was/is a real life friend of mine, Shea Davis. He's wearing all red, skinny, with the nba all star hat.

Carrying a .45 in NYC will get you in Rikers Island. As I said, there is no second amendment in NYC. If you want to carry, you have to break the law, basically. And that means jailtime. A lot of people in in jail because the gov tramples on liberties, people get "conspiracy" charges that can't really be proven or defended against, lots of bullshit.

But that wasn't the idea. The idea is what simple, even makeshift bladed weapons can do.

Yo one thing that been passed over here is staying strapped with your stab proof vest. That initial rush gonna come fast so having a vest to hopefully catch a few stabs is the difference between survive or don't.

I wear my joint 24-7 when I out. Never know when someone gonna try to stick you. Either that or get at him faster strike him, maybe offer forwrds an arm/hand, take the sticking and then merc that fool.

I reckon my vest done saved me more than you can count fingers.
