    Ghost's Competition Breakdowns

Today was not my day. Went 0-3-1 with the draw being due to sub only rules. Three of those matches were absolute wars. As far as beginner divisions go it had some really slick technical guys and a lot of action. I had a blast, and I think a lot of those guys are going to go far. Vids to come soon. I got all of them. Not going to hide my failures.

    Probably?

You need to get your mind right.

I got real close on one. It didn't stick. Same deal with two ankle locks. Close only counts in horse shoes and hand grenades.

Well, here's the footage as promised. I'm super fucking disappointed with myself.

First match was vs this Asian dude that just had a really fluid top game and was good at staying off the bottom. I absolutely failed to get anything meaningful going here.

Second match was short. I thought he had tried to jump into a guillotine, and as such I would be safe in side control. I thought wrong. He hit me with something called a cobra choke, and I tapped when I realized I was about to take a nap. Cool dude though. Went on to take gold. I hope to see him again at open mat.

Third match was fun. I took the only 10p guy I faced to a draw and I like to think I spent a lot of time on the attack after working my way out of a triangle early on. Was completely gassed by the end of the match.

And finally my fourth match. I got three minutes of rest and I felt done. Things went decently until I gassed super hard trying to finish an ankle lock and ended up too tired to defend an armbar.

Honestly, I'm super disappointed with myself. Both of the last two guys told me afterwards that they almost tapped to the ankle locks, which somehow hurts more than not having been close at all. I need to work harder. I should do better than this.

Honestly I think there was just a shitload of talent there. Maybe I'm trying to make myself feel better, but I think people will look back at the division pic in five years and recognize some faces if they keep at it. Competition was way stiffer than the Oregon Open.

Parochial is the correct word more than likely.

It may not count but it's instructive.

Hopefully Rayce, Bill, or Omega will offer you some advice.

I'm expecting laughter and advice to just switch to aikido already.

That might be funny but not good advice.

I think that you're competing against guys who trained to compete.

You have to tell me whether that's why you're training.

Jumping Guillotines into Cobra chokes that's basics handwork fundamental grappling?

                        Probably not beginners.

                        Or even really lower-level novices.

Yeah. Cobra choke guy was also going for straight ankle and estima locks constantly. I'm pretty sure the Asian dude the smashed me hit a sakuraba style cartwheel guardpass on another dude. And the cardio from the dude's that managed to podium finish was nuts. I need to do more strength and conditioning outside of BJJ.

Also saw a surprising amount of x-guard.

I'll start with this one. Your stand up needs a lot of work. You are lacking most of the core fundamentals of proper stance, hand position and head position.

That is no Cobra choke that I've ever seen. Either way I'm fairly certain that with proper top pressure, namely planking out, being on your toes, and driving your your right shoulder into his chest, that should have eliminated his ability to actually choke you. Also he was giving you a Von Flue choke, and I promise that if you had started choking him, he wouldn't have been choking you.
