In other news, I finally (and begrudgingly) did my nage no kata and received shodan. I couldn't really spar for a little while after breaking my elbow at that tournament, so it gave me time to rehash it. I'm just now getting back to being able to break grips on that side.
    Congratulations!

Many people in Judo regard Kata in Judo like brocolli.
They will eat it if it is put on their plate,
And they know the older folks make sure that it is present semi-regularly as part of the meals.
But left to their own devices,
many Judo students would probably fill up on other things
and never get around to the brocolli/kata if it was not required for Judo promotion purposes...

Even though it isn't my main thing at all, my next goal is to get a BJJ black belt. That'll take me a little while.

Are you a master of sport in sambo?

No, that's really, really hard for an American to get. Most of the guys here that claim to have that distinction did not come about it genuinely through competition.

If I were to ever really earn such an honor, it would be many years from now, provided I do well at the veterans world cups in the future.

Right on. Do you do combat sambo as well as sport sambo? I was trying to find touneys near me and was only able to find a few and none were close.

I used to practice some combat sambo, but I'm almost 40 years old now and don't particularly like getting punched anymore. Tournaments are very rare here, but we do host some here in Texas at least once a year.

              Judo is the closest approximate.

Rayce, please let me know if you hear of any Sambo tournaments near us,
And I will do the same for you.
Competing in a Sambo tournament is a bucket list item for me.
And I have some students that also would like to get to compete in one.

Sandy North over in Hollywood, FL, is a two or three-time sambo world champ. He'd be a good resource, although I don't know if he's into organizing tournaments.

I've been on the veterans world team with him twice now.

Trying to find video from my last competition at Veterans World Cup, but it may be lost in the annals of time.

I went two matches without being scored on, and won my second by tech-fall against a Kazakh.
