    how do you use....

the half-guard with the outside knee inserted? i see this guard alot and ive just started using it myself. i like it alot, but im not clear on some of the things you can do from there.

so how do you guys use it, if at all? do you use the same sweeps that you do without the knee in? any that you can do only with the knee in? play it with the underhook? overhook?

Are you talking about the "Bravo" way of doing it? B/c I use that a lot and it works suprisingly well at keeping the top-man off-balanced to open him up for attacks/sweeps.

I use both offensively and defensively...like if the top-man is in my half-guard and is trying to pass, I'll crank on that real hard to get him off-balanced and I'll buck or roll for an attempted sweep. I'll all use it if he's stalling to move him where I want without much danger of him mounting any serious offense....

To answer your question, though...I know a lot of guys (including myself) at my school who use the basic sweeps with it, you'll just have the top-man's legs better trapped...

It's called "lockdown" from Bravo; assuming the half guard DaChinkOfSteel pointed out above is the one you are referring to.

I also use it pretty much constantly when in half-guard. There are quite a few sweeps you can set up from the lockdown. Play with it a bit and feel how your opponent tries to compensate his base for your movement. I choose the sweep based on the set-up and reaction of my opponent from lockdown.

You can also be a twit calf lock the guy with it. It rarley results in a tap (except in the case of an extreme n00b) but it's pretty annoying for your opponent.

I think he's talking about the half guard when you bring you outside knee across their stomach like a scissors sweep.

yeah that one. i apologize for the confusion.

i first noticed this way of doing half when my instructor did it to me, then more when i looked for it in adcc. i started using it myself, and i find its main function is to keep the guy from putting his weight on you.

This is my preferred half guard, because if I can get the under hook on that same side my legs are long enough that I don't need to lockdown or do any other funny business to keep my opponent from passing. Tranditionally this is how I use half guard once I have the underhook and control the other hand (sticky-paw if you will):

Attempt old-school. If fails, try two other sweeps I like. If fails push with knee on stomach and regain full guard.

Because my legs are long, I can get enough destance to get back to full guard, I don't know how well this will work for those with shorter legs. It takes some getting used to before you can keep people from passing you, but it's what I go to first when I have half guard.

Thanks for the correction. I've never heard of it. The outside knee from half-guard across the hips, ala, scissor sweep style? Seems like a pretty dangerous position for the guy on bottom, i.e, fucked up scissor sweep about to get passed or more likeley than not guy on bottom is about to get HIS back taken rather than the other way around.

Anyone got pics or vid of the progression/sweeps Villian is reffering to? I'll have to start working from it and see.

Omoplata from pinch half guard (haven't heard that term berfore, neat-o). I have his right leg trapped in my half guard, so my left knee comes in as discussed. I have my left arm underhooking his right (maked sure it is a solid underhook because we are going for that arm). I come up on my right elbow and pull my bottom leg out, posting it on his hip. Kick off of his hip with the right foot and roll to the omoplata on his right arm.

Regain guard from pinch half guard. I am in the same position, but this time I come up onto my right hand, creating more distance with my left knee in his hip. I pull out my right leg and get a butterfly hook or CG as appropriate with my right leg. Turn back to the left and adjust my left leg to BG or CG as appropriate. I seem to have more success when I go for BG (making sure I get his left arm underhooked).

If I have my left knee on his stomach and control of both sleeves, I start by pushing him away with my knee and pulling him towards me by the sleeves. I then quickly release his sleeves and remove the knee, while quickly leaning forward chest to chest. While leaning forward, I get the underhook with my left arm, and insert my right arm between his legs. I then simply sit back and push off the ground with right foot while rolling to the left. If done right he ends up on his back. An excellent sweep.

The sleeve was the starting position from which I was taught the sweep, so that's really just how I think about the move when I go through it in my head. The sleeves are for control while you are waiting for the right time to get the underhooks. You need to remove the knee in order to sit up.

As for x-guard, I just don't use it, and it's pretty hard to get on a guy who's on his knees wouldn't you say? Nobody around here uses x-guard anyway. Come to think of it, I don't think I've every seen anyone use that guard in Sweden.

And of course there is the distincs posibility that my description is completely incomprehensible to anyone but me...

That's the way I read it.

Sweeps mostly. Lots and lots of sweeps.
