When a person was promoted in my unit in the Marine Corps, everyone of equal or higher rank formed two columns and you walked between them as they punched your arms. Then you turned around and walked back the opposite way, so everyone got a shot in on both arms. I don't think I've ever been so black and blue as when I got promoted to sergeant. Good times.
