how much does size matter?

    how much does size matter?

    im not a very big person, im 5 foot 6 inches and only weigh between 110 and 115 pounds generally. I work out alot and am able to lift twice my body weight, and do some crazy pointless stuff like two finger push ups. But does being light give me a big disadvantage in a fight?

        Dunno. Take you and me, for example. I weigh roughly twice as much as you. Do you think you could stop me from tackling you to the ground?

        Not saying you're some kind of pushover, but chances are I would have you on you back, right? Weight can mean a lot... I've got twice as much kinetic energy... or something.

              Size and strength matter a lot.

              If someone is too heavy they can just, you know, fall on you.

              I weigh in at a hefty 63kg/140lbs, and in my experience I can handle a less skilled grappler who weighs around 90kg/200lbs, but they can still take me down easily.

              I thank Judo for giving me the ability to take down larger people, but I have to be aggressive about it, or else they will take me down first.. and regardless of what position I land in, I'd much rather instigate the takedown than be subjected to one.

              Something you might want to study is boxing. Boxing sparring will give you a great idea of how you should fare in a stand-up fight with someone a lot bigger than you. It'll also help you survive in the pocket long enough to get a takedown and try to attach yourself to the bigger guy's throat.

              imho, your best hope against someone massively larger than you is some kind of choke, and failing that, attacking a limb on the ground. i think when you're standing reach and weight make the guy way too dangerous to box with for an extended period of time.

                Strength is a factor, to be sure.

                Bigger guys hit harder and can take hits better than little guys. Anyone who says otherwise is lying or stupid.

                115 Lbs is a huge disadvantage. But you can mitigate it. Lift weights and eat a lot. train with hard contact against larger opponents and learn to capitalize on mistakes. Practice working off you back, and learn to be evasive in a fight.

                  Yea it matters. I'm a skinny guy too, so I can empathize. But just because you're small doesn't mean it is impossible to beat a larger guy. I have begun to look at it as a ratio, the more size they have they less technique they need to beat you, and it goes both ways.

                  In high school there was a guy who was twice my size, literally, and was convinced his size was enough to beat my technique. I pinned him in under a minute in front of a crowd, they were convinced I won by fluke and if he had been able to punch things would've been different. So we fought again this time no rules just first to give up, big guys hit really really really hard. He was sloppy though and I caught him in a rnc.

                  Moral of the story: Big guys hit really really really hard. I'm convinced that if he had even a tiny bit of training the second fight would've been different. So if you are little you have to work a lot harder to win, if you are going against a bigger guy.

                      May I ask how old are you? At that height, you should be in the 140s; the very upper 130s is be the lowest you should be at all times IMO.

                        How fast are you? Being aggressive and fast is the way I had to learn to deal with bigger opponents. I spar with people a majority of the time I and try to improve my speed and power of my techniques so that I may stand a chance against larger opponents.

                          Quoted again for truth. I've noticed as train more in grappling, the weight of opponents I'm comfortable with goes up. I've learned to be very mobile, because if someone locks down on me it's very tough to get out, and I've learned to work a lot off my back because it can be hard to keep someone down when they can easily bench more than my body weight.

                            I was 145 last year but all of a sudden i just got really light i was a little stronger too.

                              im pretty fast, i test my friends to see who can block i punch from the hip but only one can and it took him 8 trys. so im alot faster then i am strong
