    Trouble with taking the back...

Hello, I have a little over a half year experience in BJJ and weigh about 130 lbs. The reason I can't ask my instructor this is because my instructor is back in california and I just got out of boot camp a month ago. I am currently looking for a good academy. My question for those of you who are more experienced is, how should I respond when someone tries to turn into me while I'm taking their back from standing.

Let's say I get over under bear hug, or double underhooks, and I'm trying to get to their back to weigh them down and put the anaconda on them (body triangle). Now let's say they either hook their arm around the back of my neck to stop me from getting there, or they keep turning in to face me while I'm trying to get around. Should I abandon and go for something else or is there any way I can bypass that defense?

    Thanks guys!

You're better off taking them down from that position. If you want their back use an armdrag instead. Marcelo is the master:

      Hey MT,

Could you post a review of our camp on the appropriate thread? It was great to meet you in person!

Well I was looking for a way to deal with them hooking their arm behind your neck once I already have over unders and am halfway to the back.

Just that specific situation, really. I don't understand Judo terminology. I've never really been a part of it. Could you explain, hedgehog?

Funny thing is I WAS going to go, but my sponsorship fell through, and my buddy Eric showed me a little Sambo. He was mostly a Roman-Greco Wrestler, but he learned a bit of sambo through thast connect too.

Hedge, please explain how you take the back from using Tani Otoshi.

This is not a troll, but I just can't see it happening unless a scramble ensues after the throw.

For the OP, turn on your PM if you can, I have a answer for your posture breaking question. The thread is now closed.

I have never seen, nor I have I ever been able in training or competition, gi or no-gi, been able to take someones back from standing in a tight clinch (either over/under or double-unders) without a scramble and the guy making a mistake.

Otherwise, MT has stated the correct in that you need space to work an arm drag or a duck under shot to take the back.

Some of the guys with more wrestling experience may have some other ideas.
