    Cup & mouthguard for bjj???

Do you wear a cup or mouth guard for BJJ. I noyiced my teeth grinding when i get put in chokes and what not but i dont know if its against regulations or anything. I also usally squash my junk when im putting somebody in am armbar.

Tap instead of gritting your teeth and squeeze your knees instead of trying to armlock someone with your own balls.

You don't need a cup or mouthguard

This is not worthy of the advanced grappling forum, expect it to be moved.

Their arm shouldn't be that close to your groin, clamp it closer to your knees, it'll also give you a better angle for overextension. Also, you shouldn't have posted this in the advanced forum, this is a basic technique question.

I always wear both, but some places ban cups as you can use them to enhance armbars. Personally, a mouthpiece prevents the pain of many a stray elbow or other spaz, and cups prevent the oh so popular knee to the nuts on guard pass.

I would advise you to refrain from posting in the advanced technique areas until you are a bit more experienced on the mat and here on BS.

Edit: In case you don't know, I'm the moderator of the technique section.
Shut the hell up and train.

As a brand new white belt I have personally done both to people already. The other day while attempting a guard pass I felt my knee impact a guy's pelvic bone and apologized before he even felt it. But then he did feel it and had to take a minute to recover, and I couldn't help feeling bad. I'm thinking of bringing my pillow-like kneepads for a while until I stop doing that.

I would definitely always wear a mouth guard. I've chipped teeth and bitten through my tongue when not wearing one.

There is more leeway on wearing a cup but I also wear one all the time.

I have several chipped teeth (but, hey! I'm British) from being kneed, elbowed and headbutted by beginners. As for the arm bar problem, as people have said ur doing it wrong.

Really these sorts of questions are best put to your instructor, I mean that's what you pay for, right?

I always wear a cup...but don't usually use mouth guard.

5 years no chipped teeth, but a couple of bloody gums. I really just don't wear one out of being lazy. Used to wear a cup all the time, but I started training without one and it'll only make you better since you can't rely on the cup.

How do you rely on a cup?

I've only done BJJ once, for a one-day seminar, but a cup saved my nuts 3 times in that one session.

I'm also the only guy that wears a cup at my Kali class. Better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.

One good shot in the balls will say "yes" louder than 100 tough guys saying "no".

                            Cup horror story

I wore my cup and practiced a lot of 50/50, and deep half (top side)

mucho pressure was put on my cup while I tried to manuever my legs around with techniques I'm trying to familiarize with.

the pressure and stretching caused a gross stretch mark right where my cup sits.

                            I roll cupless now.

IBJJF tournaments won't let you compete with a cup on

Armbars, for example. If you wear a cup, armbars will be easier because you have a hard plastic fulcrum to lever the arm against. Without a cup, you need to perform the armbar correctly lest you use your opponent’s arm to crush your own balls, so you need to squeeze your knees together properly. I can think of a few other positional things where not wearing a cup forces me to think more about applying proper pressure with my knees.

I believe cups are disallowed in most BJJ competition precisely because they make armbars easier.
