    Back of the wrist

How safe and effective is it to hit with the back of the wrist? I've heard about palm strikes, but not the back of the wrist. Right now I'm learning Drunken Boxing, and the hand technique I'm using now is called Drunken Bottle Fist, which basically uses the back of the wrist of either or both hands.

with the wrist straight, or bent?

My instructor once called it the "Chicken Wrist". (it was tongue in cheek) It can hurt. However, you've got far more effective weapons.

The 'chicken wrist' is fun to play around with though.

        The wrist is bent.

you'll break your wrist no problem if you hit even an inch off target towards your fingers.

the leverage will cause you to break your wrist. i wouldn't punch like that.

There are contexts where that strike can make sense but they're rare. There's no point going all out to hit someone with your wrists, that's plain dumb.
But if you find yourself with your hand below a chin, palm down, then maybe, just maybe it's worth whacking the chin upwards, if only to follow through with a r34l punch.
Try it on yourself. As hard as you can. Go on, try it!

Believe it or not, I did just try this on myself at about 80% of full power.

It hurt my wrist more than my temple, which was probably the wrong target.

It's the only drunken fist I know so far, unfortunately. I've only started two days ago.

There is a point at the end of the unla (radius?) bone very near the wrist that has a use as a weapon. as people on here have mentioned, there are far better ways to train to fight then complicated backhand type strikes using the wrist, but if you must,....

That area has only skin over the bone so you can get used to the slight pain, and it is bone, so you can use it like a club. WC uses it up under the chin exclusively, and some claim it can cause a fatal injury this way. I doubt that, but we can hit solid walls and things pretty hard in demonstrations with this type of strike.

You should know that I very rarely laugh at things I read on the internet, or anywhere, but that fucking cracked me up. what an image.

I did say 'under the chin'. Wrist + temple = comedy

                      Now try it again.

I learnt this move back in my krotty days, we were told it was for if your hand was injured somehow. I think it could be viable but it's low percentage, unless you have a real need for it i dont see much point to it.

It's a bony tough area so I reckon one could do some serious damage with it if one were to connect with it, which I think is unlikely when facing a skilled opponent.

You could choose to use it against an unskilled opponent, in order to impress your buddies. That could be fun.

I've decided if i ever get to beat up an unskilled opponent outside of a sporting arena I will slice them up with elbows.

Good call. I'll be looking for a neck crank. Untrained head=basketball.
                              Failing that, standing RNC FTW
