Sokoudjou Wins 2009 Winter Judo Nationals

At the 100KG+ (Heavyweight) black belt Division.

While waiting for the next Dream event, Sokoudjou bides his time by participating in this year's Winter Nationals. He swept through the competition, the Cameroonian walks through and defeats all of his opponents. This year's Winter Nationals had over 400 participants and was held just last weekend held at the Damien Catholic Private School in La Verne, ca. This is the first of the videos and photos that will be emerging of the event.

Sokoudjou is slated to fight Minowa in the Dream New Year's Eve Super Hulk Finale event.

While I was down in Temecula training, I got to speak with Sokoudjou and was fortunate enough to be able to take a judo class headed by the Cameroonian. Sokoudjou's Judo is superb. His footwork, strength, speed and grip game is spectacular. Training in one of the best Judo Dojos in America, I feel even more blessed to have had the opportunity to train with Sokoudjou.

I wish him the best of luck in his New Year's Eve Super Hulk Tournament finale.

Did you write the bit at the bottom? It doesn't sound like you.

A bunch of kids from my dojo went to nationals, actually, I wonder if any of them saw Sok and realized who he was.

VERY cool that he still teaches judo classes. In LA it's largely community center based. Is it similar down there?

He only teaches them every once in a while from what I understand. His job is to fight and he spends most of his time training so he doesn't have very much time to teach.

I got a special treat and he taught the class for me since I was a guest.

            Understandable. That's still cool.

              Very.

I was surprised by how much my judo game improved with a single class with him. I got a great new grip game and footwork awesomeness.

Best regards to Sokoudjou and a big poo-poo to those who criticized his Judo.

I don't think anyone ever criticized his judo skills, just the other elements of his MMA game.

I had to manually edit out some tags. Seriously, don't fuck around with thread tags.

He used to come down to my Judo coach's school in San Diego. I always managed to miss the times he came. Onetime I came at the wrong week. DOH

There was some debate regarding his Judos skills over at Sherdog. Of course those are the same people who seriously believe that Judo is the "Lord of the rings: the movie" to BJJ's "Lord of the rings: the book.

Ehh. We all know how he looks on the ground. Thats ONE aspect of his judo. Haven't seen any other videos proving otherwise, but these vids didn't say anything new about his ground game IMO.
I've always seen good takedowns from him. Textbook O uchi Gari on Machida. I believe his last fight had a nice TD or two as well.
