Sheer awesome.
As a Shotokan brown belt, this month kind of makes me feel warm and mushy on the inside.
I'd like to give a particular shout-out for all of the non-Kyokushin derived karate schools who still spar hard and appreciate the art and beauty of two dudes punching the hell out of each other.
I'd also like to share with you all the classic old-school karate documentary, Fighting Black Kings:

There's a montage (somewhere in part two, I believe) which includes, amongst others, a guy exploding an airborne watermelon with his fingertips.

:listen: Im sure Machida trains for his fights by practicing one-steps, and Kata, and totally ignores padwork and other alive methods
You know, sometimes people are tough fighters, despite thier training.
Im a Karateka, and a big fan of Machida, but just watch asshats like Black Toney say crap like" see you dont need BJJ, look at Lyoto Machida!" not even Knowing that grappling and pad work and "modern" methods are what got him there, not dead patterns and ibuki breathing.
Take the AVERAGE karateka and put him against the AVERAGE boxer, and i'll put my money on the boxer.Last edited by milwaukee cop; 2/03/2009 4:10pm, .

I don't think anyone will disagree
But my personal revelation re Kata is that if you train to fight (doing all the proper things like sparring and what not) then your forms or Kata make more sense and can serve some sort of purpose, from physical to mental.
They did a promo piece on Machida on UFC (which I wish I could find on Youtube) where he stated he still used all his TMA training including Kata to prepare.
It's Not Machida or his brothers doing kata that's interesting it's how they fit it in with their overall training that's interesting.
