It is a tremendous shame that when folks think of Karate they often remember more of the wannabe tough guys and the phonies rather then the legends that put it on the map to begin with.

For this month, we should remember the accomplishments and influence of such greats as Mas Oyama, Andy Hug, Hideyuki Ashihara,Tadashi Nakamura,Kaicho R. David Farzinzad, and Bas Rutten.

We should also remember the feats of current Karateka such as George St. Pierre, Lyoto Machida,Semmy Schilt, Ryu Narushima, Nicholas Pettas, Francisco Filho.

It is truly a shame that these men are the exception to the rule.

The great thing about Karate is what it encouraged others to go out and create. Idiots are everywhere and inevitably ruin everything good about everything that was at one time awesome.

Something tells me it will fall in the month of April. It's just a hunch.

That being said... Kudos to Karate. Evidently, even once solid arts will (predominantly) go to shit if you have people making others think they've mastered it for $2k and 1 year of their time, and use non-contact training, training that isn't alive etc.

Whether that's a "great thing" depends on what those others create...

I thank Bullshido for giving karate back a bit of the glamour it once had. McDojo`s will stay around like a bad rash or vermin, abusing the name of this martial art.
BUT: This thread has showed us that there is still a descent crowd out there sweating and bleeding for their beloved martial art: karate.
                      Bullshido, I salute you

Actually, Joko Ninomiya's (was taking Judo, and probably Kyokushin under Ashihara), his teacher told him, "choose," (one or the other).

                                One exception.

To which the best answer, in Japan, would be: "No. I choose both"...and then head to the nearest Daido-Juku club.
