It's this WBC that wants Tyson to do MT. This is huge for Muay Thai.

Very interesting. I hope this traslates to more (and better) exposure for the martial arts, especially in the USA.

The UFC has done a lot to debunk some of the myths that existed about MA competitions, but I am unclear on the public's perception of the sport itself, still. MT seems like it has enough ritual/respect built into it not to turn people off.

Until they see some poor bastard get KTFO by a knee to the face, that is! lol!!

This appears to be an old article, though. 2002? Is this the most current info?

Hopefully now there will be more Muay Thai on TV, right now there's just occasional K-1 on ESPN2. I get tired of watching Western boxing, I almost find myself yelling "someone throw a goddamn kick!"

So we are to expect a surge of MT places popping up left and right for the next 10 or so years like with all other fads?

              KICK ASS!!

Yeah, since Muay Thai is a modernization of Muay Thai Boran, which was just an offshoot of Krabi Krabong.

                Muay Thai is a fad.

I was about to comment on the 2002 date also. Have there been MT any fights in the US scantioned by the WBC yet? I'm also curious if elbows were/will be allowed in the US. I'm fairly sure that in the one professional MT title bout I saw in Massachusetts last year, elbows were not allowed.

Will this cross into Female Muay Thai or is that not being touched/will be covered up by the WBC?

                      **RANT**

Speaking of Krabi Krabong... I ordered a DBMA Krabi video in November and they still don't have them in stock. $%^$#@! Also, ordered some new shin guards from Fairtex and they are out of stock! It's all because of the new MT fad! *$#%!

                      :munky2:

So.. is this a good or a bad thing. From what I've heard of the various american boxing associations and the views they have, this sounds like a bad thing, in that they can introduce rulesets that emasculate the sport, and nobody will be able to do a damned thing about it.

Will this impact Muay Thai fights in the UK? Does an American commision become all powerfull?

Would Tyson even last a fight in Muay Thai? He has bad legs as it is.

It seems like a good and bad thing. Being from Thailand I'm as happy as can be that MT is gonna get its place at the table so to speak, but the risk is that the WBC is gonna monopolize MT and change it as it sees fit in order to make it more palatable. I mean even though some of the MT fights I saw back home were elbow + face = ktfo, alot more were strategic matches that might not sell as well to the average boxing fan.. Hopefully the Thai voices who are helping out will keep things balanced, but as you can see from the heavyweight boxing division alot of times money outweighs reason.
