That all sounds fucked up. Where I go we dont need security at parties like you guys have. No fire officals, or poilice men (we auctaully run from them), or brothers watching stairwells. We keep check of our friends and dont let the shit hit the fan. About as originsed as we get is how we run from the police and DD's.

In england they chuck you in a block of flats when you are at uni and practically demand that you get pissed out of your face on cheap booze.

Jesus H Christ, fuckin frats. I've partied at UMASS Amherst at a frat and they were some good dudes.

On the other hand at Auburn University in Alabama back in 99' I beat the shit out of a frat boy for running his suck at a bar called the Blue house/room or some shit. While I was working him over near the pool table, his "brothers" went and hid in the pisser and the ones that didn't hid behind their girlfriends.

BJJ when you are drunk is teh D34D1Y!! You can get the mount and then puke in their face. Drowned = Choked bitches! And you can't dust vomit for fingerprints, so you can make a clean getaway.

police adn ire officials are for parties where we charge money and let anyone with college ID in. We throw them once or twice a year. 2-3 times a semester it's completely self-regulated and free (cocktails), but we still have brothers watching everything. When there is more than 100 people in one place, it needs to be watched. No matter what college you go to. And around every weekend, we have informal parties with maybe 20-50 people, those we just watch informally.

the people that stabbed him in the head werent members of the frat. apparently from what my father told me they were black gang members...what they were doing at a frat party i dont know. But one of the brothers of the house tried to get them to leave, so they drew a butterfly knife and stabbed him in the temple. last i heard the kid was in a coma.

It's always important to have a couple sober guys of an intimidating stature to keep shit under control at parties. Things don't get crazy too often here at De Paul, but when they do, they get insane. I've seen guys get kicked down flights of stairs, jumped by three people, and, on one occasion, stabbed.

It's not so much a frat problem as it is an idiot problem. When you've got some guy with something to prove, he'll do stupid shit to impress people. Sometimes, that involves fighting. My friend got cut a couple weeks ago by some guy who clearly didn't intend to finish the job. He cut my friend on the neck with a straight razor (just causing a scratch) and then ran away when my friend didn't back down. He clearly wanted to impress his friends; and he was willing to do that kind of stupid shit to impress them. Like I said, it's an idiot problem.

Lol one of my instrutors was telling me that what happens if after you party and a bunch of drunks apporach you and try to attack you. You kick them in the groin and then get away.

I think that much of this talk about whether to have security (or armed security) is dependent upon the location of your school and the propensity of others for bad acts.

When I was at UCLA, we were required to have security guards for any social event. Indeed, such security guards were a must to serve as an impartial observer in case of any legal action, as well as to enforce the guest list.

At UCLA, while the students themselves were not normally a problem, its vicinity to less well-behaved parts of time was an invitation for trouble. The one and only time I have had a gun pulled on me was at a fraternity party where 18th street gangsters attempted to crash the party and started a riot, leaving about 4 people with serious medical repurcussions. A couple of months later, (with one of their members in prison), they drove by the house with a shotgun and peppered some of the front windows (with no injuries, thank god).

While alcohol can be a problem when mixed with testosterone, I believe that the majority of people just want to have a good time. The exceptions, unfortuneately, may justify a response with either increased security, or increased police patrols while such events occur.

The simple fact is that problems will occur and to avoid liability, the fraternities should take it upon themselves to provide adequate security and other protections (e.g. rides home, sober persons checking to make sure that drunken people (including females) are cared for without fear of embarassment or assault). If the executive committees of the fraternities only paid attention to the liability that exists for them throwing social events, I think that their handling of social events would likely include such remedies.
