Prominent Houston BJJ Black Belt Steps Down As Academy Leader/Instructor

I want to start off by saying that i 100% believe the allegations to be true. you ask why? Because i have been a victim. My brother and I started going to solis martial arts when we were very young. The school became a family. My parents got involved and we became very good friends with the solis family. My parents trusted Alvis with everything. He and his family were labeled family friends and even invited to family functions. I also want to add that as i got older i remember a couple of women who out of the blue left the school when they were really active before and then were talked very badly about once they left. I was young so wasnt given all the details. When i was 18 my parents and my brother were still attending the school and i had put on some weight that i wanted to get off. Alvis informed my parents that he would give me free personal training lessons in order to help me lose weight as a favor to friends. I took him up on it. Day one he informs me that all his female students weight in in their underwear. He named a few of the other students that i knew and respected for years and informed me that if i was serious and wanted to model or fight this was something i was going to have to do. I trusted him so didn't even question it, i knew weigh ins for fights were done in underwear so i chalked it up to part of it. He would make sexual comments to me and play them off as joking so i thought it was part of his adult humor and thought that theres no way this man that was so close to my family really meant it or was serious. There was one instance that he said that my bra weighed to much and he couldnt get an accurate weight with it on. so without question i took it off. At this point he never touched me but did make comments about my boobs. Thats when i started questioning his motives. A week or so later he started making comments about how i owed him for the personal training that he was giving me. He said he is worth $100 a half hour and what was i going to do for him. he then said that he was just kidding. He liked to talk about how close him and my parents were etc also to reiterate the trust. Each week it got worse. It finally got to the point that he was outright saying im giving you free personal training when are you going to f*** me. i would tell him i wasnt and began mentioning things to my grandma that things just didnt feel right. He then started sending me myspace messages asking me for photos of me because he needed to see if i would take good photos for modeling. I kept telling him no and just about everyday id get a message asking for photos. The next personal training session after that he went on to tell me that he had saved photos off my myspace back when i was underage and had them as his screen saver until his wife told him to take them off. He also told me hed been watching me for a long time. The following personal training after that i went to leave when the other instructor and his student were leaving the building and alvis cornered me to come back inside. I was scared and immediately sat down in front of the open windows. He then sat down in a chair and scooted up towards me and started to stick his and up my pants, i kept trying to swat him off but he continued and got more and more forceful. I started to curl up my legs and talk about church and god. He then started telling me how all the women want him at church etc. I curled up into fetel position and held my legs tight while he continued but i tried to keep my cool not knowing what was going to set him off to become more forceful. A student then walked in for the morning class (who happened to by my best friends husband) I then began to talk to him as i got up and walked out before he could have gone to the back to change clothes. At that point is when i told my family and friends and never went back again. Family and friends tried to confront them and his only response was that I wanted him and i wanted it. He then played me off to be the liar when i told the truth and as he had done before turned several people against me. I would like to add that the people who believed him and not me are no longer at that school because truth finally came out.

Thank you for coming forward. I think that the staff here can verify that we aren't the same people posting and no one is my "little sock puppet". These are legit claims and there is something that I might add. If I remember correctly Alvis has a degree in psychology and has a charisma that attracts people to him. He knows how to work people in a cult leader like fashion. The people that are making these claims did raise a stink locally but it was all suppressed. I'm happy that this forum has allowed everyone an opportunity to post their stories. It is my desire that this never happens to another woman again and that is why I am here. Re:Hypocrisy, I have found it is very common. There are tons of examples of: police criminals, child care pedophiles, rich Christians, child abuse activist abusers, meat eaters who profess belief in reincarnation, DEA drug dealers. All kinds... nothing surprises me anymore.

Again a sincere thank you to those coming forward, it helps put things into perspective for those of us who are ignorant of the situation.

I am a woman and I was a former student of Alvis Solis. I had a lot of respect for him for what he did. He was a leader. All of that changed the day he asked me kiss him on the lips. I kept telling him no. He then proceeded to asked me to kiss him on the cheek instead. And I still refused. I was crushed because I was torn between my love for jiu jitsu and the creep who taught it to me.

I figured he would stop his advances because I kept telling him no. However, the sexual harassment continued. He would ask me what color panties I wore. He would constantly grab my butt. Even on the mats he would make sexual remarks to me and other females, one of which was an underage girl.

I left the school because I could not take the sexual harassment. It was not going to stop. It did not stop with just me. He made me hate jiu jitsu. It is ironic that Alvis Solis was teaching a self defense art but would prey on women. Eventually, I was able to join a different team with absolutely no drama. And I can continue my training, what I love to do.

Just wanted to say that I hold huge respect for you adding to this thread. I'm sorry for your experiences and would assure you that not all martial arts instructor's would abuse their position in the manner that you outlined above.

All I am saying is that if more info is coming ... great! If not, your word attached to a screen name alone is not enough, as you pointed to yourself. I understand you not getting it, you're there in it and not an active poster. I am mainly just butt hurt that a couple posters who have been here for a while don't seem to get that simple idea.

It is nothing personal and is actually a protection against every bias but a skeptical one. Anyone could easily make the same claim you did, to any announcement that any instructor had retired from any art in any town. I personally am no where near Alvis Solis nor do I even share an Art with him. I know nothing of his reputation so I remain(ed) skeptical and ask for anyone reading to think on things.

Do I care enough to do anything besides warn readers to caution and ask for more information? No ... the website is down, I don't see any active contact info at first cursory glance ... Both things point to grey areas ... I am sure the hell not going to defend someone I know nothing about when they leave a trail like that.

At a local tournament, Alvis expressed to me that he needed someone to talk to about the recent passing of his father, he asked me to go outside with him to talk. Instead of talking about this, he led me to the side of the high school gym hosting the tournament, and tried to coerce me into oral sex. I refused, and asked him to please stop this behavior. I went back into the tournament and pretended like it didn't happen.

At his gym, after most students had left from training, he followed me to the women's dressing room, pushed me against a wall and forcefully kissed me. I pushed him off and again asked him to please stop this behavior, and to respect my wishes to not be pursued in this way.

At the IBJJF Pan Jiu Jitsu Championship, he sent me messages saying he wished he could get a private room so that I could meet him there and have sex with him. I asked him to please stop sending me messages of that nature. This happened over 2 years ago and I no longer have the text messages. I wanted to forget it ever happened.

While I was competing for SMAA at a tournament, he told me that watching me compete in my first match gave him an erection.

Alvis made it very clear that if I continued to deny his sexual advances, that I would no longer be able to compete with the team, and that I would no longer advance in BJJ. Eventually, I could not handle the constant sexual harassment and coercion, so I left the team and school.
