I was wondering if this would appear on here. I actually really like what they are trying to do. In theory sensors and algorithms could judge damage more accurately than a human judge but they have a very very long way to go. They do however openly admit their current limitations and present themselves as open to ideas and criticism.

At the moment though it's just silly. Simulating unarmoured combat while wearing 40lbs and using synthetic "sharp" weapons as if they are designed for bashing.

not remotely like unarmed sword fighting but that's due to the equipment and software. Their current suits don't have sensors in the arms and the algorithms are calculating pure impact damage and not cutting. The fighters are actually doing a good job of gaming the rules.

They haven't been able to find medical data for cutting damage, they want to do this themselves at some point in the future. If they an do this, sense edge alignment, push/draws, use steel weapons and miniaturise the sensors in to a gambeson equivalent they might have a decent system.

I'd also like to see ground fighting included in the rules.

The referee need to be able to break up the fighters when necessary. Usually in HEMA they have a big stick and are called a stickler. Plastic axe and shield seems like a very strange choice though.

Sometimes it pays to have a stick when your job is to step between 2 guys swinging sticks.

One of the guys from UWM has joined my HEMA group. 12 years of kenjutsu among other martial arts. Needless to say he pretty quick on his feet and has some interesting techniques. Powerful striker too.

In case the superior fighter gets all moral and decides not to end it?
Consider for a moment that there is no meme about brown-haired, brown-eyed step children.
