"entire industries of people who exist solely to keep dumbasses alive"
While that doesn't EXACTLY describe my workplace, it kinda does. I work in a prosthetics clinic. Who are our most common patients? Sharkbite victims? People who got in motorcycle accidents? People born without limbs? No. It's diabetes patients whose feet disintegrated out from under them. Every single day more of them pour in, needing custom medical devices that take hours or days to fabricate.
Our clinic's budget is stretched to the limit, as the hospital we're part of is losing government (taxpayer) funding little by little all the time. Because of this, we don't have enough money to give quality care to all of our patients.
Come on people, get your lives together. I did.

Yeah. I now read the fatpeoplestories subreddit thanks to this thread, and it's full of people who work in the medical profession, or have friends or family that do, who vent their frustration about that kind of thing.
There was one story about a guy with diabetes and a heart condition coming in weighing 500kg. Even though they kept him in hospital he didn't lose any weight cos relatives were bringing him fast food in the hospital, even when specifically instructed not to do so. Sad that people get themselves in such a state, even sadder to basically watch them eat themselves to death.

Went from 250 in Jan to 202 this week (I hit 199 after jits today). Truthfully it wasn't that hard. Cut portions, cut fries, no sodas, stopped drinking, upped my workouts. Went down steady with no backsliding. At 6'3" people are telling me I could put a few back on. Going to try to compete at 205 and then we will see, but it only takes a bit of discipline to control your weight.

Yeah, i have a very large family member who is all Gung-Ho about this SJW, "Check your privilege" crap and refuses to lose weight because of it. Like Phrost said, in some cases it's legitimate but this is not one of them. Your own health and fitness is strictly your OWN responsibility. What's scary is that our family has a history of Diabetes and Heart Disease, so i have a feeling this will not end well.
