Wing Chun sifu wins MMA championship?

So, every now and again, I look in on Keith Mazza's Traditional Wing Chun website. A coouple of years ago, I headed over to Sifu Mazza's kwoon (at the request of forum member DeadlyVenom7) and partook in a class. Sifu Mazza and Sifu Phillip Redmond were both very welcoming, and very gentlemanly. I came away from the class with a good bit of respect for them-- I didn't expect to see any UFC fighters coming out of the kwoon, but I had certainly seen worse TMA training, before.

So, anyway, while bored today, I decided I'd check to see if there was anything new on Mr. Mazza's site. I was impressed to see a news item congratulating Mr. Mazza on a recent MMA win. Wanting to know more, I clicked through to this blurb:

    http://www.traditionalwingchun.com/i...page&Itemid=30

I was disappointed when a number of red flags immediately jumped out and smacked me in the face. Firstly, I had never heard of the Extreme Kickboxing Championship. I have ten teammates at Kurt Pellegrino MMA who are pro fighters, so we generally hear when new promotions pop up in the region. Still, it is possible that one could exist locally without my knowledge.

I found it awkward, though, that an MMA promotion would call itself Extreme Kickboxing. But then again, the USKBA sanctions amateur MMA bouts in NJ, so that wasn't too far off. Of course, the "mix of kickboxing and MMA rules" diidn't make any sense, and I can't remember the last time the NJ SACB sanctioned an MMA tourney with fighters doing multiple bouts in a single night.

So then I turned to MMA.tv, as their database is an official repository for all sanctioned MMA events in NJ. No record of any "Extreme Kickboxing Championship," and no record for any fighter named Mazza, at all. I gave Google a shot, but the only mentions it found of any event with this name are from Keith Mazza, himself.

Top it all off with the fact that Keith Mazza is a middle aged man in a state with a ton of hungry, young MMA fighters; and with the god-awful anti-grappling featured on the TWC site.

Anybody in the Northeast ever hear of this promotion/event?

As a writer and lead editor for a website devoted solely to keeping tabs on local combat sport events I can honestly say I have no idea.

The only thing I can think of is that Kru Extreme (legally changed his first name to "Extreme") Locasta runs the Extreme Muay Thai Challenge. Perhaps he changed the name a little and tried his hand at an MMA promotion, but I definitely would have heard of it. I'd say more likely that someone made up an event that sounds remarkably like an established but not incredibly well attended event so people will go "I think I've heard of that."

Of course, I can't say that's it's made up since stuff has slipped by me, before. I'll look into it with my contacts if you tell Kurt to return my e-mails.

Okay. The guy I know Locasta through is on vacation in Peru, right now. But, I sent out an e-mail to every MMA writer I know in the Mid-Atlantic and so far I've just gotten back two "No ideas."

Now, if this is a glorified in-house tournament, which I am increasingly more inclined to believe, with a fancy name there's no way to say it didn't happen. Basically it would be on him to provide some video or not. However, I know a lot of guys who get those in-house wins counted on their pro records just by providing video. Sometimes it counts, sometimes it doesn't. I know LI Guy even got some UCL wins to count on his record.

I used to train there, and I don't think that it was hosted by him since we had an event the weekend before, April 23rd. I'm pretty sure he would have said something in one of the classes, unless for some reason he wanted to keep it on the dl.

Sounds like they got some dudes together and had themselves an in-house hootenanny.

          On a side note,
Its no wonder he won with moves like that.

If it did happen it most likely was an in house thing where he was fed a few cans.

I just posted this at the KUNG FU magazine's Wing Chun forum to see if anyone there knows anything about it and asking them to post any information they have here.

Just took at a look at the site. Its only my gut reaction and I'd like to be proved wrong but Lord what an unmerciful load of bollocks.

Is he trapping that ass or tapping that ass?
Find out tonight on Fox News, Chicago.

                        Spoiler:

Wow... even I feel dirty after that one.

Ill tell you just how dirty after I go home and watch it.
Remember, having a hamster avatar, all I have to do is invoke the name of Richard Gere.

Maybe it was one of those underground cage fights where all the spectators are wearing tuxedos and waving fistfuls of dollars and you have to fight the guy who killed your best friend at the end.

My guess is they had a tourney under mma rules and only invited other traditional-ish schools without bjj/judo/wrestling-type grappling to "ruin" it. If that's true, aside from them exaggerating for publicity that would be pretty cool, nicer than having a point tourney for your students to attend.

those are the best kind. i used to love fighting in those, but it got hard to make friends after word got out about what kept happening to my friends.

somehow "no, dude... i'll totally *avenge* you..." didn't seem to help much.
