Just how tough is Steven Seagal, really?

I feel bad for being so mean about Steven now. I'm sure his ability to massage a childs wrist is at least 6% better than your average, untrained, violent strangers.

that's, like, the nicest I can be about him.

Modern day actors/martial artist are a joke compared to the likes of Bruce Lee, Chuck Norris, Jackie Chan, David Carradine... It is almost as if some of these guys have incorporated martial arts into their scheme just to be able to make it big in movies... It is a disgrace, All of this CGI and BS makes me sick !!!!

David Carradine? Really? I'm pretty sure he got into martial arts to be in film, and I'll bet some of the other ones did too. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Bruce probably wouldn't have worked out so much if he wasn't trying to be the biggest film star since sliced bread.

Do we have any musicians in the house? The comments on YouTube would have it that his playing is shite. Dunno - sounds okay to me, though most of the stuff I listen to personally is played with 'more enthusiasm than technical proficiency'...
It's not good. It's ok, and I lived in a rehearsal building in the past...so I've heard ok, day and night. It's that.

To my ears it doesn't sound:
          1)inspired
2)like it's played to the swing of the backing
3)on time. Albert Collins might have used his fingers, I don't know. But I've heard him play, and he was in time, and in the swing of the thing, at all times.
4)tasty....he's not hitting the sweet notes. The "tapping" he threw in the one was pitiable. (tap and pull-off really, but you can't polish a turd, and it wasn't good by any title).
          5) involved. The bits I saw didn't relate to the music very coherently.

analysis: not "good", though ok. Clunky, mildly inept, ham-fingered Sloth "Hey you guys!" moaning.

I'm not just saying this as a guitarist, but as a human. I thought someone was crying on the video....then I realized I was weeping. Crying in empathy for the backing band, who have to dangle from those awful old balls.

            That was poetry.

Here's why Stephen Seagal is NOTHING like Albert Collins, regardless of how he references them, and not even if he lived on top of them.
Watch at least the first 2 minutes, and be awed...then go watch that Seagal vid again....and laugh heartily.

I play music...it's not my job, but I do make some money playing out, and one of my biggest dreams is to tour around the country playing bass in someone's band. It doesn't necessarily need to even be a genre of music I love...I'll adapt, but I just love doing it, supporting someone's music and vision.

And I can say this with 100% certainty: I would NEVER take the job of being Steven's bass player and touring with him. His music, guitar playing, singing and stage presence are all inexcusably fucking bad (especially since he clearly actually knows his scales and stuff) and it's an absolute crime that his "celebrity" affords him even the slightest degree of success in the music world.

Seriously, if he were just some shmoe, he wouldn't even get applause at some of the open mic jams I go to.

yes indeed. Some things make gigs not worth it. I don't subscribe to the "musicians are inevitably crummy people so let's do whatever" philosophy.

Such things include (for me), intolerable laziness/being too aloof, cheating on the wife at the gigs, not being good enough, and being overly mysterious about the money. Those are all deal breakers.

I'm not certain Stevie can get it up, but he seems aloof, isn't that ok on his instrument even, and those fucking shirts...they scream..I have a small package (at least to me).

Not to mention he sings like B Arthur's ghost.

I'll bet random cup checks are a deal breaker too.

I'm paranoid. They're not going to get a cupcheck in on me. The attempts would be looked unfavorably upon, though.

I'm off to play....here's how I like my lead.

This was from a small gig in Boston, near the TD Banknorth Garden (I hate that name), at McGann's. Real low key affair, but the music still has to have some bite.

p.s. that guitar was less than $250. You can't buy your way out of suck.

I'll bet that his drummers get it the worst.

Srsly. Some bands go through drummers like shit through a goose. Who would stop to question their disappearance?

Funny you should say that. We've had about 27 drummers, over the years. Most were one-gig fill in guys...but we had our share of crazy. It's hard, almost impossible to find a great drummer, who is content with timing and feel, and who is willing to be told what's expected, for various songs.

It's hard in general, when you write songs, to get others to follow the plot..that is, assuming someone's good enough to have worked out the plot in writing a solid tune. Many bands fracture over songwriting duties, and who gets to choose to play what, and with what notice to the others.

Lucky for me, I'm in a relationship, and madly in love with the other main member of my band, and we do lots of duo performances, to keep the core solid. Mr Seagal sounds like he doesn't put that much pressure on himself, to improve.

That was the perfect way to end my Friday work day.

I'm going to go study those licks on my own ax, if you don't mind.

                            Wow....did you write this Bobby?

I went to see Seagal & his band live.

It was just this bizarre situation where Steven Seagal came to Ipswich.
It is such a fucking surreal idea that I had no choice but to attend.

by all means. If you like, I could post a video breakdown of some of them. If you think you could use it, I'd be happy to.

I gotta hit the str33t to perform. Happy playing Rabbit.
