Just how tough is Steven Seagal, really?

We've all heard the Gene LeBell poop story. We've all heard that he dicktucked when Van Damme and Bob Wall called him out. We've all heard the various lurid tabloid stories and legends about his history and private life.

What I'd like to discuss here is slightly different. I'd like to, if I may, move away from the mocking of the guy or calling him out as a nutcase and an arsehole (just for now, I promise) and instead start a discussion about what The Seagal is *really* like on the mat - as a combatant and a teacher from. I'd be interested in hearing accounts from people who've actually trained/sparred with Stevie, or have heard such accounts from people that they would be prepared to vouch for the honesty of - people with the straight line to the straight dope on The Seagal, as it were. IIRC, there was someone posting on here who said that they'd trained in SS's system and got to hang out at his house a few weekends a year...

Now, I do remember reading anecdotes on the web over the years (perhaps from Seagal's guys, perhaps not) which have stated in no uncertain terms that in terms of martial skill, he is teh r3al d3al.

Just a month or so ago, I ended up on some Aikido forum (Aikiweb, I think) and read a comment from a guy whom had supposedly encountered Seagal at a seminar a couple of years back and had been sceptical of the guy, thinking of him as a fat, old, has-been, egomaniac blowhard (which is probably true - but anyway...) - until that is Seagal told him to come at him full force and *really* try to beat the crap out of him. He did - and apparently couldn't even get near him, such was the speed of SS's footwork, blocks and deflections once he got moving, despite his fatness. Then Seagal turned things around insanely fast and nearly broke the dude's arm.

Just thought that it might be interesting to throw this out there and get a few different perspectives on the man.

I've watched some of his Aikido videos on YouTube and to be honest, the only comment I can really make is that he steers his flying ukes pretty well... :toothy6:

someone should ask Gene LeBell how tough Segal is, as opposed to how tough he thinks he is. Its a funny story. If MTripp stumbles onto this thread he should tell it

Assuming that it was an another Aikido guy trying to attack him, Seagal probably didn't have to do much to impress him.

How long has he been doing Aikido for?

Say what you want about it, but that right there is the Aikido shtick.

If he couldn't do it by now, he wouldn't be who he is.

And if he wasn't such an insecure ego maniac, he might even be likable.

As for how tough he is? Dodging punches or not, all it takes to break the man down is an insult to his pride. Not so tough eh?

Does he still think he is native american? If so littering is also an option.

Judging by the way he runs and when he appears topless in his movies looking at his shape (no homo) he would appear to have the conditioning of a little girl and probably wouldn't be able to stomach (literally) a teep and his legs would turn to jelly from a few round house kicks.

I think he is like most Aikijoka, a fucking larping joke who cant act or run or fight.

Steven Seagal is 7th-dan black belt in aikido, I think his ego bigger than ability to do martial arts, I mean his first movies were classic but now he's fat now but he claims he's god. Do you guys know much of prick he was? he was banned from SNl after hosting once, cause he treated the cast like crap. And he used to actully used to break the stunt double's bones for real WTF?

Ok, background. I am old. I know Gene LeBell personally, and to a lesser extent Bob Wall and Chuck Norris. I spent over two hours on the phone with Bob Wall on this subject.

While hesitant to post much these days, due to the sad fact that the US no longer has a legitimate and legal dueling tradition any longer. To wit, someone who wants to defile your name or honor should know they will have to look down a dueling pistol to do so, and it could mean their life. But I digress, I will post the facts once more.

First, rank is meaningless. There simply too many ways around quality control.

Second, we know for a fact that many of the stories Steven has told are lies; ie CIA stuff.

Bob Wall, along with 11 other people, called him out and nothing came of it. Steven to this day runs from Bob Wall.

On the set of "Under Seige" Steven was holding court about the mighty powers of Aikido and Ki Power. He stated he could extend his Ki into his neck and he could not be choked out.

I pause to point out I was at a major Juko-lie Ki clinic and this claim, along with many other insane ones, was made all the time. It is a common belief.

One of the stunt men, upon hearing that claim, said "I'll take that bet." That man, was Gene LeBell. Gene walked up, got behind Steven, and put the choke on. Steven tapped right away and said "I wasn't ready."

Gene said "Let me know when you are ready." Steven said "now," and grabbed for Gene's balls.... Gene sprawled, and choked Steven out, and held it for good measure.

Steven made a mess in his shorts, both poo-poo and pee-pee; Bob Wall has the cleaning statement from the set about this.

When Steve came to; he threw Gene off the set, and had him blacklisted. The National Inquirer caught wind of the story, and wrote that a 60 something stuntman just choked out the great Steven.... so a deal was made. Steven would end the blacklisting, and Gene would keep his mouth shut.

Mr. Wall and myself made no such deal.

My first hand experience is that his ego is only exceeded by his skills as a jackass.

As for fighting skills, not so much....

Nice Mtripp, do you happen to know anything about the whole Vann Damme and Seagel incident at Stallones house?

I have read conflicting versions, but if memory serves me correct their was a rumour that Gene Lebell was present as well?.......
