    November 11, 2009 12:39 p.m. EST

Steven Burton will make his initial court appearance in federal court at 9:30 a.m. Thursday.

Los Angeles, California (CNN) -- A California man is facing a criminal charge for wearing numerous Navy medals despite the fact he never served in the military, federal prosecutors said Wednesday.
Steven Burton, 39, of Palm Springs, California, has agreed to surrender to authorities Thursday morning, Thom Mrozek, spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office, Central District of California, said in a statement. He will make his initial court appearance in federal court in Riverside, California, at 9:30 a.m.
Burton has never served with any branch of the U.S. military, authorities said, but was seen and photographed several times wearing military uniforms and various medals, including a Purple Heart and the Navy Cross, the highest medal awarded by the U.S. Navy....

Damn, I'm not even an armed forces type guy, but I know that wearing those medals is something you DON'T do.
I can't imagine how much people affiliated with the armed forces must feel about that.

the woman who busted his ass was smart. she saw him wearing medals, went over all fake starry-eyed and got a pic with him, then sent the pic to the proper authorities. quick thinking on her part.

Why would anyone do that? Seriously is your life that terrible you have to pretend to be a military person? Douche

Unless they're mental, I'd guess that it's for the same reasons that people fake anything else about their pasts. To get a better job or to pick up chicks.

There is a huge difference between saying "Yea, I'm a movie producer" and dressing up as a decorated marine at your high school reunion.

For the same reason people play "professional" roller hockey and get "inducted" into Martial Arts Hall of Fames I suppose. Of course, anyone with a brain can see through the examples I provided, while fake-military people often go unnoticed by otherwise educated people.

Well, if there's one thing that life has taught me, it's that there are people in this world who have absolutely no concept of 'taking things too far' (or at least a wildly different concept) when it comes to financial gain or getting positive attention and/or free stuff. Basically, they're pricks.

I have to play the devil's advocate. Why should this be a felony?

I've met a few guys like that - mainly the fuckwits who run their mouths off about their Andy McNab fantasies for free drinks in bars.

One guy who drank where I used to work claimed that he was an SAS assassin who'd worked on secondment to MI6 throughout the 80s, 'sanctioning' people in Eastern Europe and the Middle East, as well as training the BlackOps guys.

Check it out man.. There's not that many actual medal of honor recipients.. At one time, there were even more impostors than actual recipients.. Sad.. Some of them are dead because they gave their life valiantly to save others. Some of them are not even the actual servicemen that died, but their parents/siblings/children.. How would you feel if you walked up to someone wearing the Medal of Honor that did not earn it after your son/brother/father/mother/etc.. died giving their life for this country? If you say that you would not be even the slightest bit angry about that, then you should have your head checked out..

Because scumbag bastards like this devalue the sacrifice and honour of good men and women. They bask in their reflected glory without ever having had the balls to put their arse on the line, they are frauds and swindlers. If they get a fuck because someone falls for thier lies it shoud be classed as rape, if they get bought a drink in a bar it should be fraud. They wear the uniform but don't have the baggage.

over the years ive met english dudes either claiming to be SAS or hinting at it.
What is it with that 2nd guy on the balcony, did he do something really cool or something?

I know a dutch prick who went so far as tattooing the kct (commando's) emblem on his arm.
He never even was in the boyscouts.
