The Crappier Your Martial Arts Are, The More Books You Can Sell.

I went to a Chapters Bookstore(a big retail chain in Canada) a few weeks ago to see if I could pick up some MA books while I was in the city. I made my way over to the MA section of the store, but when I got there I could've sworn I was in the agriculture section due to the copious amounts of horse shit in the books I was flipping through. All I was looking for was something practical, with some theory, and heaven forbid a bit of history. I don't think that's to much to ask.

Most of the books were the stuff about ninjers, akido(no offense to akidoka but I think knowing 1000x ways to do wrist throw is useless), shaolin monk hype, and whatever the hell ashida kim is shitting out these days.

One book stood out against them all. It was a book(can't recall the name, nor really want to) about a long lost Tibetan fighting art. The book was authored by some white asiaphile who claimed that the only other person who knew this art was his teacher who lives in a cave in some mountain(I forget the exact details).

My astonishment is only matched by how appalled I am that such crappy martial art books (among other things) can sell, much less be allowed published at all.

Granted I am not expert in the martial arts, so maybe I'll write series of books called "How to become a Level 56 GM in The Long Lost Native-Canadian Art of Great White Panda Shaolin Ninjer-do in 4 Weeks!"

It'll be a New York Times All time best seller.

Good martial arts, are taught by good martial artists. There is less of a demand for books.

BJJ books sell pretty well though, I think due to the complexity / magnitude of its techniques.

      Surely not this fella...

There's a thread about him in MABS, he has a school near Sydney.

        Gunnar Fucking Nelson?!?!?!?!?

In all seriousness, I went on a bit of a book buying spree about 12 years ago when I was a hopeless samurai club shirt-wearing Japanophile.

I still have about twelve or thirteen books, and the only one that ever gets cracked open now and then is Judo: Formal Techniques by Draeger/Otaki.

Does anybody want a slightly used copy of Ueshiba's Art of Peace? It's a riveting read, somewhere between Transcendentalism and some shit you'd hear from a patchouli-stinking barefoot PETA chick with hairy pits.

            Awesome!

You know, it's a testament to the superiority of Tibetan martial arts that the region hasn't ever been subjugated by the Chinese government.

Too western. Make it about the ancient mongolians or some shit and you'll have a winner.

Everyone knows that true Tibetan MAs are found in Kalmykia where they've been taught underground for centuries.

I can't agree with the OP's thesis. Or there would be far more Systema books out there.

Also: Tibetan martial arts = bad Alec Baldwin movie = knowing what evil lurks in the hearts of men...

mongolian spear grappling it is then. i'll work on the history about how they used jump/thrust techniques to pole vault over the great wall and how mongolians invented martial arts and korea.

you start thinking of a costume/uniform to wear.

You'd better. I wouldn't want all that fellowship money to be worthless for the rest of us. You're supposed to "give back."
