1 Year of Judo: Worth It?

Okay, so basically my current place of training is closed off and I have one year until I transfer to a university and continue my martial arts there. I was training under a Dan Inosanto/Dog Brother student and will basically be doing the same when I transfer, so I have been learning Muay Thai and the FMAs (as well as a couple other styles, but these two are my main focus). However, my current place of training is gone, and now I have to choose between two places: a boxing/Muay Thai gym and a Judo dojo.

On one hand, the Judo is cheaper and I would like to become more versatile as a fighter, plus I just love the idea of throwing people around. On the other hand, the other place having boxing in addition to Muay Thai will get me better at punching (as well as get my over my fear of being punched in the face, as my teacher focused more on our kicks and knees) and I will also become a much better standup fighter.

Both places compete, and I am pretty sure of their quality.
Here is the website for the Boxing/Muay Thai place (its not on their online schedule but I went in their and they told me about their Muay Thai program):

Expand your martial horizons. Try Judo.
Shut the hell up and train.

The Judo is Kodokan, and they kind of tend to pooh-pooh the newaza aspect. So if you're looking for an in-depth ground game, that's not your place.

I was impressed by the rockin' intro music, though.

I've actually started considering it. The only problem is money, as hours at work have been sucking lately and I still have a bunch of other stuff I have to pay.

Oh, and if it is at all helpful or relevant to my question, my main purpose for doing martial arts is self-defense.

Thanks for the replies so far ladies and gents!

Judo because it's what I do, and because it's awesome, and because it'll be a new skillset. It's cheap, and you'll get a solid set of skills from a year of practice.

True dat for the last part of the above. I did Judo for a few years as a kid. This was over ten years ago now so obviously whatever skill i had has dwindled pretty much away BUT it's still enough to tool people who don't have a stand up grappling background. So I'd say give it a try, my experience is that a little bit can go a long way.

Hmm, you guys have a point, a basic grounding in Judo is better than none. Plus, I have a couple friends I train with once a week, two of whom used to do Muay Thai (and they only did Muay Thai, not a bunch of stuff like me and are thus better at Muay Thai than me) so even if I don't progress further I can keep my skills from getting too rusty.

                  Thanks Bullshido!

Huh? What the hell do you mean by Kodokan Judo shunning ne-waza?

On another note OP run don't walk to the Judo.

                      Judo!

Just learning how to fall correctly will make it worth it, really.

The boxing gym looks like a place you would only get the most out of if you wanted to be an amateur fighter, which would probably take you a year of good training to reach. Since this is a 1 year deal, go with Judo.

If you had intention to stay more than a year and wanted to step into a ring i'd say fuck Judo and take the boxing. Sounds like a great gym, awesome training hours compared to mine and a high focus on it's amateur team.

Throwing people around is a great felling!
If you feel so, and if you like flying too, go to judo.
One year will offer you at least a good ukemi waza as well as the basis of working with the distance and simple techniques. Ukemi waza are the most usefull thing, they should be teached to every child in every familly.

Anyhow I would not expect to successfully make people flying around you in movie fashion in just one year.
More experienced fighter seldom do that so spectacular.

Oh! For stepping in a ring after more years of training, I would not fuck judo but "upgrade" it to a jujutsu style. But it may not be available in your described conditions.
