Joe Bonacci: A self-promoted legend passes away, let the nut-riding begin

For disclaimer's sake, yeah it sucks that someone has died. If you know this guy I don't mean any offense to his loss, just his shitty operation.

For those interested in a bio, I will link it here. Of course the guy is a member of the Master Head of Family Sokeship Council or some shit like that, and if you respect those guys well you're an idiot too. Here ya go:

    http://www.aima-usa.com/index.php?op...d=105&Itemid=1

So why am I fired up, and what possible reason do I have to think this will be an intolerable nut ride? I was once in an AIMA school. These guys LOVED to name drop. "We went to a seminar and met Bill Superfoot." "Hey we went to another seminar and met Benny the Jet." "Ooh did we mention we're going to a seminar with DePasquale Jr next month?" I probably heard more name dropping in the one year I was in that school than ever in the rest of my 20 plus years in martial arts.

So I leave the organization, not having had any official ties. I never tested for rank, though they had one website which listed me as one of "their" black belts. I let this one slide, until one organization partnered with another. If you've never witnessed a tag-team nut ride, it's a beautiful thing. Shihan number one of System A hereby grants Shihan number two of System B a fifth degree black belt in System A, and vice versa. Both individuals have just doubled their number of certifications with a high five, fucking fabulous. And the best thing is right after this happens, every black belt in both systems get retro-graded as well! So while I started out as a balck belt in krotty without ever testing for it, I was now a black belt in jujitsu, also without ever testing! At this point I had to send a polite request to be removed from the website, and to their credit, they did so.

So I have checked in on the AIMA every now and then, and it never fails that while the various sensei and shihan within the organization do a great job at circle jerking each other, they all collectively idolize and worship this Bonacci character. In all fairness I've never personally met the guy, so I'm sure maybe he really is the untouchable legend they all make him out to be.

One thing is for certain, the idolatry is sure to increase with his passing. I can't wait.

While the org you mention sounds sucky, Joe was the real deal.

I never met the guy personally, but was in the org and have met four of the shihan level instructors. If he was the real deal, he didn't know how to pass that knowledge onto others. All I ever heard was Hanshi Bonacci worship from sucky martial artists.

I take it back, one of the four shihans I met was a knowledgable, respectful badass. The other three were pretty much useless turds.

I'm perfectly willing to believe he's a legitimate Isshin Ryu and Shotokan black belt. The whole 10th dan soke thing is just blatantly silly however.

Was his Isshinryu dan grading one of those deals where he spends 9 months in Okinawa and Shimabuku gives him a 3rd dan before he steps on the plane back to America, but tells him not to wear it for five or ten years? There was a lot of that going on back in the 50s with Isshinryu, according to some of the reading and listening I've done. Whole martial arts careers took place during that plane ride.
It seems to me that the Sanjuriu Martial Art is not in guestion, but, rather the character of Mr. Galt.

This org had a few cops in it, I believe Joe was as well or at least he trained them. I really don't care enough to look up which. Anyway that was always immediate prrof that their krotty was teh real for teh street. Then we would learn move for move "bunkai" out of the kata. Utterly silly stuff, I really hope the police force was taught better...

Pardon my idle curiosity. HAve you an opinion on his Bronze Star and his Cross of Gallantry during his Service in the Mekong Delta during 1968?

I ask as you have a Military tag and may have an opinion on the necessary Qualities likely to be required by a Gallantry award winner; additionally a Recondo; moreover, one in the 9th.

I seem to remember that the 9th had a, er, "formidable" reputation.

I'm in London, UK, just in case you're wondering.

                Thank you.

I decided I should quote myself, as someone decided that a great way to contact me to discuss my post was not by posting an opposing opinion here, and not by sending me a provate message, but commenting my profile. OK sure, why not.

Again, I never met the now late great grand master soke hanshi Joe Pesci, I mean Bonacci. I have witnessed plenty of self-promotion among his org's members, and everyone who did train with this guy idolized him. That's my personal observation, and I suppose anyone has plenty of right to disagree.

For what it's worth, I didn't read the wall of text posted on my profile before deleting it. The quick once over I did make proved it was surely proof of my OP, nut riding.

He sounds like a hell of a guy - and might have had a much longer life except for serving in the Army and United States Pentagon's policy of using Agent Orange. More than 21,000,000 US gallons of Agent Orange were sprayed across South Vietnam.

I'd like to point out the phenomenon another poster noted on the "Japan Discovers Ninjers" thread, linked here FYI:
Japan discovers ninjers- hijinks ensue - No BS MMA and Martial Arts

A user points out how absurdly people idolize eastern martial arts and their masters. I think it is very fitting.

I suppose in fairness to Mr Bonacci's passing, I should take my collected notes about the organization and post in a separate thread. The topic will be a lot funnier without the gloomy air of a recent passing.

                            Crushing step,

“From the one you called moron , I will repost my message for you.”

We have never met and unfortunately we must now talk under unfavorable terms. I have joined this site because of your recent post, and am writing you in regards to your post concerning Joseph Bonacci. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and obviously you have yours.

I will not debate your reckless banter of someone you never met, however I will address something that I hope you will understand. I have read some of your posts on the net and have learned much about you even though you do not reveal who you are. You seem to wish for your readers to assume you are a family man, and you say you have served this country in the military.

Well here is the biggest NUT RUB... Mrs. Bonacci was researching information on her husband Joseph shortly after his death and she found your article using “google” and she cried. Your disclaimer did not help much.

I was at his funeral and watched as children and a community mourned, I watched the police department honor guard honor him and I watched him receive a veterans burial as they discussed a highly decorated vet who proudly served his country, community, and yes his students (to include the bronze star with 5 oak leaf clusters and the cross of gallantry again with five oak leaf clusters, to include the purple heart).

I don't care what you think about your experience with someone in martial arts you claim was terrible, what I do care about is a mourning wife of a combat veteran who has to read your banter and bashing of something that he created and shared with his wife and children, his students and for them they hold it dear to their heart.
Your article on "where were you on 911" was interesting, and yes I know where I was. I was at work at the fire department watching and mourning for the families who were losing loved ones.

I mention this because it has a hint of eluding to some what intelligent person so I hope you get what I am saying about your post here.

Your uneducated attempt to bash a bad experience in your life has affected the Bonacci family personally directly after his death, and you should be feeling pretty crappy about that.

For the record you can read Joseph Bonacci's bio listed at world black belt (www.worldblackbelt.com) as he is not a “self proclaimed” grand master. He is recognized by many reputable people as a legitimately ranked instructor in his given style of martial arts. It may not be what you like but regardless of your perfection, it is legit and he is ranked by the WUKO/WKF to the 8th degree which is the official governing body (NGB) for the International Olympic Committee along with many other hard earned awards I will not bore you with.

Once again, it may not be in your "favorite" style but it is as legit as it gets and for you to disgrace him to his family publicly with your article... well as a husband and veteran yourself, you have stooped pretty low and acted incredibly dishonorable as a man, a veteran, and a martial artist.

I hope you take this message for what it is; it is my opinion of one man who seems to have a some what honorable background acting very dishonorable just for the sake of posting a blog for others to discuss and fuss over.

As for me, you can be reach me directly anytime at my office here in Florida. If you have checked our AIMA site “on occasion” then maybe you will recognize my name. I do not know who you are, as it seems to be much more convenient for you to not provide that information, anywhere. Again, as for me my door is always open and I can assure you I have never hid behind a title, style, or belt and I welcome all "guests" such as yourself who seem to have some misguided preconceptions.

In closing, I could care less what you think of AIMA or anybody in the organization including me. I am persuaded to believe your true colors are above for all to see. What I do care about, what everyone else here on this site should care about, is a very loving wife who was crushed by your arrogant letter... I hope you can see that as your "cover name" has eluded to, this is just one more “crushing step” you can add to your credits... I hope you, your wife and family are proud.

                            Cordially,

                            Mike Albenze
