I understand that I'm a noob and am thus ignorant of any history between the opposing sides in that thread. But it doesn't really seem like much of a challenge. A BJJ purple being better on the ground than a judo green is on the same level of foregone conclusion as the sky being blue tomorrow. It's possible it won't be, but the odds are kind of against that happening.

I'm not trying to be a dick or antagonistic here, and also not trying to start another qualification argument. Just that Hedge tapping 1.2 seems like a matter of course. To me, it looked more like a statement of "Hey everyone, watch me make this guy look like a moron!" than "I'm going to prove he's not qualified to teach."

Again, I don't know Hedge. But that's sure what it sounded like.

      Protip? I don't think I understand.

I put challenge in quotes because it seemed more in the nature of clowning 1.2 within the context of the thread. That takes a degree of the seriousness out of it.

And also, c'mon, I'm not exactly on a side here though I do sympathize with 1.2's predicament if not always his actions.

      But a challenge? Really?

Seems a bit much and frankly, Hedge would have beaten him, he's been competing and training far longer.

And for the record, I think most of these "challenge" things that happen on this site a little over the top.
Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible, without surrender,
be on good terms with all persons.
      Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
      and listen to others,
      even to the dull and ignorant;
      they too have their story.

That was about the first post. The heart didn't need to be a taglike reference; he could have inserted a character entity. But I digress.

As opposed to the times when internetz iz srs bsnss?

You're talking to the guy who challenged Toby Christensen. Seriously. I was going to toss him out of his wheelchair. That's how "seriously" I take these things.

I don't think that was the point. I think the point is, if you're afraid to take on Hedgey with one hand tied behind his back (hello, Redbelt!), you probably don't need to be supervising live randori. Never mind winning.

        Well, um, yes.

Ducking is still a bitch move, though.

I don't know Hedge either. I think, though, that if 1point2 was afraid to roll with Hedge, that says a lot about his grappling ability. I'd roll with Hedgey at a TD, and I know with absolute certainty that I'd lose. If he tied one hand behind his back, well, we'd see if the dreaded tickling attack would work.

And I have no business instructing grappling.

              HAHAHAHAHAH. I remember that now.

Toby could use a good gimp-pimping. He's such a relentless asshole that he brings it on himself.

Well... Ok. I can't really argue with you here.

I'm harsh because I know your thought process. The harsh approach is exactly what would have helped me back then. When you're that attached to a place, you will do whatever it takes to avoid leaving it, even when it's unhealthy for you. That's why you'll only make that decision when you have no place left to hide.
Link to story thread plz. Strangely enough, when you're not e-challenging me for dubious reasons, I actually think we'd get along.

WW--Jack's comments were in person at the 2009 Grand Ultimate OMA/CMA One Heart Conclave of Martial Arts, and in emails/chats subsequently. Also, I have indeed started BJJ, have no fear, under just-now-promoted-to-BJJBB Mike Wacker in Fishkill, who is under Steve Kardian.

Johnny--I know they made this transition in the past. Sometimes I wonder if they make it harder or easier for others to do the same.

Thanks for the encouragement JP, NoTeefa, Zendo, et al. I'd actually looooove do to San Da or MT or some other form of kickboxing (I had a grand old time at the TD, and I want to do it again and fix all those bad habits). I am looking at possibilities locally, though I hope to move soon if I can get a job in NYC.

Enh, it started out shat up by the pissiness of the fight-ducking OP.

Someday he'll grow up and realize what a snotty douchebag he's being. I don't intend to hold my breath though.

In the meantime, it's nice that he is not actively making the world worse in one particular respect. That's progress.

Bingo. A grappling instructor shouldn't be afraid to grapple with anyone, nevermind an anemic, nearsighted, vegetarian, 160 pound, relatively new purple. Maybe he won't get the tap, but he/she should be able to at least put up a good showing.

The tragedy isn't that 1.2 was teaching grappling while I could tap him out. The tragedy is that that's true and it wouldn't take me any effort.

And I have no business instructing grappling.
                        And i'm barely qualified.

Provided a reasonable ruleset and referee are in place, who should be? I mean, let's say I got a wild hair up my ass about wrestling you over the debate on global capitalism or feminism or something. I know you're invested in those issues and everything, but would you, like, not honor the tap or ignore heart attacks?

And like most tragedies, someone else winds up paying for the "hero's" tragic flaws.

I guess I am the lucky one. I am going through the similar situation, but I have a cheat out of it. As I leave my lovely home in Louisiana to go to college, I end my career at my dojo of 4-5 years. Of course, while I am no fan of doing forms or the fact that my tournament options were point sparring, I had an experience that validated a good part of my training recently.

This 30 year old guy who was a brown belt in the past returned. He went through the beginner class again, and came to the normal class with a very intense attitude. Now you don't spar in the first few weeks of the beginner class, so this may have been his first time sparring in years, at least one of the first. Anyway, he came at me like I just punched his wife, with what were more like hay-makers then anything we teach. Normally your spar down, and let weaker fighters connect some, but his aggression did not allow for that. He did not hit me once, and I felt in control enough that I did not need to drill him. My confidence if someone just tries to brawl me is much higher, but then again 30 minutes earlier we were throwing knife hand blocks... what a useless technique. So I feel like I have hit this great middle ground where I am satisfied with the striking I have learned, but am ready to move on to a new school without much regret. Sanda/Judo preferably.

Man, looking back, the timing is pretty amazing. Really sucks that your situation made it so tough to leave. I get this free pass...

Part of the delay was waiting/hoping for such an opportunity to leave-with-a-reason. I decided I couldn't wait any longer.

I do envy people who get those leaving excuses, though.
