When teh mean str33ts are less funny (buzzkill)

Someone got shot across from my house today. My front door was cordoned off. This isn't fun, but I want to say FUCK!!!! so I put it in YMAS.

The friends he was with, wouldn't talk to cops, so now more people will die over what's probably some retarded pseudo-insult multiplied by not enough sex in their lives.....or plain old drugs.

We all want to be safe, so we might train, or stay aware...but this kid was just in front of the dollar store, and that was it. You can't pak sau a friggin gun to the back of the head.

After, I saw a cameraman filming some blood, on the snow nearby. Was I wrong to want to smash his camera, and beat him up a little bit? I got the sense that if there were some brains left, he'd be zooming in...even if it wouldn't go on air.

For those of you that don't know, Boston is heavily segregated, and most of the murders, happen in Jamaica Plain where I'm at, and Roxbury, and Dorchester. Latino, Black and Black respectively, if you're talking about primary ethnic makeup. The only time the press covers our neighborhoods, is for killing, and maiming.

Anyone else get mad at the ambulance chasers?? press or lawyers?

I guess there isn't much to talk about, I just needed to post on it.

Walk out your front door, turn right, walk 4 blocks. Look for "For Rent" signs. GTFO out of the ghetto.

Bob - I'll agree with the general hate for ambulance chasers. They must be heartless bastards who'll do anything, be manipulated into competing for the most sensational shot/story.

Hope you're okay, if its not an option to move it seems like you're not the type to get involved in this sort of thing. More than often the victim and the perpetrator know each other.

It is pretty sad when you stated that those areas are only covered by the media when something bad happens. It doesn't give much hope to those who live there nor any incentive to change.

On a cold and grey Chigago morn, another little baby child is born....

But seriously, as a police officer, sometimes I wish I had the authority to punch news people in the face. And you should move.

yeah thanks all. It was only a few months back, that my friend who works across the street had her 4 year old shot. Some knuckleheads in a beef, and people shoot, and voi la....more kids dead or maimed.

I can't move, though. I can't afford to live in the city at all, let alone move to a less rundown part of it. JP has a large part of the ghey/dog-owning/collegekid/artist population, in addition to latinos and min. in general. There are plenty of us who have no choice.

Again, for those of you that don't know. We in Boston have the worst cost-of-living in the nation. Rent may be higher in NYC and San Fran, but in Massholeachussets, they find a way to come out on top, or bottom, as the case may be.

With the tech sector, and the world's largest concentration of medical facilities, the rent in Boston reflects that, that and the 50 colleges, many of which are pricey. It doesn't reflect how hard it is to make a living wage.

No, here I am in the hood. We all joke about the str33t, but Boston never did make much sense with it's violence. Kids here are so repressed, and detatched from any sense of community, that "stop snitchin" shirts were big here, till the mayor declared war on them.

That kid, had his cousin, and girl w/ him, and they wouldn't say shit to police. With an 70 or 80& unsolved rate for murders, why would they? Now w/ Gov. Patrick's new cuts to local aid, we'll have less cops.

Thanks GWBush, for the tax cuts that'll increase the bodies in the city. Hey, some right wingers can get in office locally now, they'll just say their tough on crime, before slashing more officers and firemen.

Whenever gang violence drops here, they immediately cut gang outreach programs, and bring it back. My girl grew up here, when there were 250 murders a year in this little city. She lived in the thick of it, and I'm so happy I can't get us out of this yet.

Busing contributed to a large part of the crime and violence in Boston. Children grow up not feeling part of their neighborhood and then go to schools miles and miles away with people who don't want them there. But then you get called a racist if you point it out. It isn't Bushes fault, it is the community. We have so many politicians under indictment and investigation and the black ones just call it racism and the white ones just hire expensive lawyers.

And it is not a just color thing. Dorcester has alot of white on white crime, the mob, etc. Never ming bunker hill and parts of southie. And JP has mansions. All of them have the stupid 'Stop Snitching' T-shirts.

My friend lives in JP and the police station across form his house was shot at, some kid tried to mug him and he has another homeless kid sleeping in his stairwell.

I disagree here. There was resentment, but it's a constant backlash of hundreds of years of deeply entrenched racism, and not just schools. So you know, it's not the bussed kids that are causing the problems in Boston. Inner city schools are shit, and run like prisons. Community isn't just towns, as the rich suburbs would like to think. Community is a broader concept. Society has a responsibility, and a pressing need to ensure all kids are educated. It's one of the most basic premises of organized society.

People who have no hope, for the future, won't respect the consequences of their actions. You have to know, this kid that died, the odds of him doing anything approaching an insult/injury worthy of a killing are minute-to-nonexistent. The herded, and mis-trusted, abused and harassed kids in this city, in these schools, know that society doesn't care, that the cops don't care, parents, teachers, strangers, govt. this is why it's all so wild west.

Busing tells kids their community ain't worth being in. Don't you think that also has something to dowith it?

                          No, you aren't wrong.

I worked in broadcast TV at a network affiliate while in college and I had a similar experience.

I *knew and understood* that this stuff is featured on the news, however we had a situation where a teenage girl and her boyfriend stole her mother's care from Illinois, got caught shoplifting at a mall here in Arizona and her boyfriend shot the security guard.

The local police set up a road block, had a shootout with the boyfriend, he got killed and the girl was arrested.

Two days later, an Illinois affiliate showed up at the mother's house, camera in hand to illicit a "response to her daughter's situation". Understandably the mother had no response other then crying.

The news director was literally creaming his pants when the video came in off the satellite about "how great it was and he couldn't wait to get it on the air."

I quit that night and went into educational video production.

exactly. Thank you Lily for seeing what's important in this. 'Just move' is something that I've heard idiots say about people who live in poverty stricken nations. "..hey, starving? just move, it's all sand there...har har....".

I don't know if people understand how the rat race works. To be where the jobs are, you have to pay the rent..which is relative to how far away the jobs are. The more of your time, that you're willing to give away in transit, the further from the noise you can go. Consequently, the more you are trying to get done, the closer to 'the action' you need to be. (I say you, I mean me)

The poor parts of Boston, cost more than the mid-range burbs. If someone can grasp that, then there's hope that they'll understand that problem areas, need to be improved, not moved away from. Not everyone can move to somewhere else, for a variety of reasons. I have to be close to the action, because of what I do.

That doesn't make it my fault, that we've an uncaring system, or that the kid was murdered. It's not the fault of the parents that the schools are shit. I've had to help and do 'things' before, because no one else was going to, and some shit was about to go down. People have to feel like a community, to act more like one.

They already know their community ain't worth being in, because of the way it's run.

It's an opportunity, for a small slice of the kids stuck in that, to get access to real school systems, with a support structure, and teachers/principals/staff that won't harass, molest, or abuse them. That in turn, gives a motivation to the districts that work to keep the distribution of dollars area specific, to change that, so they can have their little enclaves, without ruining society, and whole generations of kids.

Not to mention that their kids in the burbs, are starving for some culture, and often don't share their parents fear of the future, or their xenophobic tendencies.
