See, here is the problem Why are you trying to pigeon hole it to ATA? Why not defend TKD? TKD, as a whole, gets more shit than the ATA. Is that your agenda, save the ATA? ATA gets shit for a reason the newest is now MMA seminars. After these Seminars MMA is taught in the schools. Sorry, ATA doesn't get absolution for doing what they (not all schools) always do, MCdojoization of popular styles cause of 1 MMA fight.
This is a link to a video of an ATA Taekwondo instructor in a MMA event. I know ATA has a bad name here and I just wanted to give proof that generalizations are bad.
Yet, you just made a generalization with this statement.

Oddly enough, the ATA school up the road from me appears to have an MMA program... I wonder if they would let me observe it a couple of classes.

Any point you were trying to prove was just destroyed by this post.

Thanks though for reinforcing the shitty reputation of the ATA.

If I took an ATA TKD seminar, TKDers would have a fit if I ran around saying "I know some TKD."

So really, where is all this coming from. Are you the guy in the video? Why do you care? What is your stake in this holy crusade to save the ATA?

And have you been to an MMA seminar at the ATA academy?

Holy shit. There it is! That was some really ugly stuff. This is the next step huh? I heard a guy that I work with talking about something like this. But I didn't realize is was this commercialized. Wow! They are going all in. So now we will have a thousand kids running around saying they are blackbelts in ATA MMA. Great!

                    ATA MMA

ATA Mixed Martial Arts incorporates advanced Cardiovascular training, Striking, Pressure Point Control Tactics, Joint Locks/Chokes, and Ground Fighting. Each class will include training in those specific areas but in the last part of the class students will put the concepts together for an MMA segment. The purpose of the ATA MMA training is to broaden the experience of current students as well as provide an outlet for the current MMA craze. One important note is that we do not provide cage fighting specific training for those that are interested in MMA fighting. We incorporate the same LifeSkill and philosophy into our MMA training that can be found in our traditional martial arts classes.

I did BJJ for 3 months straight (and by straight I mean 5 days a week several times a day) and I would say, compared to the people at the school I know jack shit about it. (Yes the school is one of the top schools in the US but that is a moot point)
You wana tell me that after a "seminar" people know some jits? Are you fucking kidding me?
That is the same as when I would say "I did 5 years of TKD about 4-6 times a week I should be a BB by now". Well matter of fact, I am not and you don't know anything about Jits.

whatever man..its a seminar not a lifetime of training....you can learn some chokes and stuff in a couple hours.....then practice it with people....after a seminar you will know "some" jui-jitsu

you guys seem to be extremists..anyways, my point has been said.

Have a good day and keep the hate alive. :)

That's crappling. Trust me, I know. Because I'm a striker who doesn't train groundfighting, so all my groundfighting is crappling.

One seminar will not convert crappling to grappling, even if it was taught by the best instructors in the world.

And guess what: most ATA MMA is taught by people who are the antithesis of the best instructors in the world.

                            Trust me, padawan.

You think I deserve a BB after 5 years of tkd? Because if you know some jits after a seminar,I should have a BB following your logic, right? I have trained with former Olympic champions and national coaches in TKD and did it for 5 years. That should qualify for something right?
No? Well then I guess you don't know jits after a weekend.

And if you think it should count for something, I will provide you the info and you can send me may BB.

So I, a novice with no talent, taught a lady friend of mine how to throw a jab, a cross, and a hook one time for about 15-20 minutes. At the end of it her striking skills seemed similar to that of the knock out dummy in the original video.
