Atemi Ryu Jujitsu--it would be funny if it wasn't so sad.

It's a beautiful, sunny Saturday in Los Angeles.

After oversleeping for my morning grappling class, I decided to soldier up and head to an afternoon session. But it's only noon, so I thought "Why not go to the park and read a book?".

I get to the park and it appears that the universe has decided to entertain me in a different way. On the grass, a huge rubber mat is set in the middle of a dozen or so guys in various stages of dress. One guy had a Vulcan gi. Another was wearing a camouflage shirt and gi pants. And several others wore karate gis with YELLOW RUBBER GUNS tucked into their belts.

The instructor yells something and a white belt walks into the middle of the mat. Four guys surround him and try to---I honestly don't know, grab at him? After five seconds of playing tag, they all fall in a pile. Then everyone claps and a new student walks in the middle.

    Confused? Yeah, so was I.

Then the teacher started teaching some wrist-locks. "Oh, maybe that could be useful," I thought. Then I see what the wrist-locks are supposed to defend. Oh, wait. He was teaching white belts how to disarm someone who WAS HOLDING A GUN TO YOUR FACE.

They would literally line up with their little yellow guns and hold them an inch away from the defender. The defender would then do a choreographed takedown. It was absolutely hilarious.

Did I mention he had 6 year old kids doing this defense, too? It was seriously the worst thing I've ever seen.

I seriously feel bad for the people taking this type of instruction. It seems like a sure-fire way to, at the very least, get beaten down horribly in a fight. Maybe even killed.

And can someone explain to me WHY someone would train at a place like that? Especially in a big city, where there are plenty of options to train.

I'm not exaggerating when I say there are some of the best martial arts schools in the world within 10 miles of where these people were training. The Muay Thai Academy, Gokor and Gene Lebell's judo/sambo school, Legends MMA, Street Sports, and on and on.

    ---------------------------------------

And if you want a good laugh, check out the website. It's awesome.

My friends, I give to you:

In the video he has a clip that says Army Special Forces training at Fort Bragg. Everyone in the audience was wearing standard PTs. Now if you been to Bragg, where I am now, you know that SF guys don't wear those for PT. Matter of fact most the units in SF and 82nd land have their own unit shirts they wear. I wonder when this was and with which group.

I like that you can see some of the guys in the front row laughing while he does his demonstration.

        well, revtruhrt....

Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

As a Jujitsu practitioner myself - I find this sort of egocentric and optimistic point of view when it comes to gun self defense so flawed....

Maybe someone should go along who knows what they're doing volunteer for one of these dammed fool demos and show his methods for what they are - of no real practical use whatsoever by the sound of things (and some of the methods used in the video on the site... seem to have WAYYYY to many flashy hand movements for JJ compared to what we're getting to know in our class)

            - NOT SF. I don't think they even have an AIRBORNE tab anymore.

82nd Airborne, Advanced Non-Commissioned Officers Academy at Fort Bragg, NC
-Not 100% but I don't think there is ANCOC here. I know they do BNCOC Phase 1 because it isn't MOS specific but not sure if they do that for ANCOC.

            U. S. Army Special Forces, John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School at Fort Bragg, NC.
-It could be possible its JSWC but like I said before all the units in that area (most along Ardennes) have distinct unit shirts for PT. However, they could have worn their normal ones for this. Possible but not likely.

                    "Atemi ryu"????

OK, the easiest way to deal with these ass clowns is to actually learn to read and speak Japanese.

Years ago someone translated a rank certificate from Juko-lie and it was wet your pants funny. The words "whore house karate" were there for anyone who can read japanese to see!

"Atemi" or more correctly "Atemi waza" Means to strike the vital points. Ryu or more correctly ryu-ha, is a general term for field of study as in "japanese ryu-ha" or "Okinawan ryu-ha"

To put those words together as if they were a style unto themselves is just silly. What they are reaching for would correctly be called "Nihon Kenpo" but lets not wake them up.
"Out of every hundred men, ten shouldn't even be there, eighty are just targets, nine are the real fighters, and we are lucky to have them, for they make the battle. Ah, but the one, one is a warrior, and he will bring the others back." -- Hericletus, circa 500 BC

Did anyone look at the pics? There is one of a class. And in the back I think I see the volcan gi that you were talking about. Pretty funny.

There is also a pic of some guy that looks like he just had a hemorrhoid or something.

                        this looks like normal kenpo...

except for this guy, this guy is just awesome:
In summation your argument denotes a lack of intellectual honesty on your part. It is my contention that this matter would best be solved with fisticuffs. I believe I will be victorious in this regard.

this is pretty bad. If you're going to fake a name for a made-up ryu, shouldn't it at least sound legitimate?
