An Article About the Best Martial Arts Style

Here's an article I wrote that got published recently and got a lot of hits. I've started doing freelance writing to write more about martial arts, the BS that surrounds it, myth and reality, and how there really isn't a BEST style.

The fight is what makes the man, not his style.

I also ended up writing about the real advantages to learning martial arts (even though it doesn't make someone a better fighter automatically), why the average person is not Bruce Lee, and why the belt ranking tradition in martial arts should be shot to hell (in a nice way).

I mentioned Bullshido.net and its important role in the MA community as the cleaner of bullshit of all types. I've been out of the forums for over a year but it doesn't mean I forgot where I learned most of the essentials.

Read the article and let me know what you think:

Sure, if you want to check it out. It's not a bad article based on how many people searched it.

I realized that this is probably the wrong section. Can this please be moved to the Article/editorial/community section?

Criticism? Would be cool to see what could be improved. I admit the title sucks but you gotta do what you gotta do to promote it. It was the publisher's choice.

Investigation and discussion wise, I did bring up some points about the belt ranking system, the illusion that knowing martial arts automatically makes someone invincible, and other stuff.

While us at Bullshido beat these topics like a dead horse, the rest of the world knows little about it. No other article in the entire AC site directly talked about these topics and Bullshido.net.

So read it or not I guess.

Some of your analogies were convoluted, confusing, and down right dumb (people become cops to own a gun? WTF?). I also don't know the length constrictions of your article, but it seems like you only touched on subjects that needed a lot more explaining (like why the belt system is stupid). The part about 'why should I train MA if I'm already a good fighter?' was strange. How many people are good fighters without ever training? I would have changed that to something along the lines of 'If you're a good fighter, why not test yourself in competition against training MA and see how good you are?'

You could start by losing the analogies. You are belaboring your points. Give your audience some credit for understanding fairly obvious points after reasonably minimal explanation. Again, just my $0.02

Associated Content will post pretty much anything, outside of obvious al-Qaeda directives to sleeper cells.

If you call that "freelance writing", you're an idiot.

You bring up a good point. When I wrote about the whole CS and cop analogy, it wasn't something I made up. I came across the example a few times in rl, including in these forums sometime in 2005, so I had to bring it up.

I'm not a professional writer but I'm getting there, still working on better analogies. But did you guys get the main point with the CS and cop analogy?

There is still a lot of truth to them if you think about it. I wanted to write something the average reader can relate to, something casual.

                    Honestly?

The entire thing needs to be rewritten. You have poor paragraph breaks, run on sentences, and your point meanders.

                    *edit*

I doubt this will get moved to the Article section. That is usually saved for things we approve on bullshido as a website. Your article has to many flaws.

It was weak with little to no structure and obscure quotes. Being witty is a skill that plays in a conversation does but not show in the written word unless your a skilled writer. But none the less it was an attempt and you should keep working and accept criticism for its purpose.

Why don't you explain what you meant. Professional writer? I went to a State basic school that paper would have got you a D at best. I'm being generous.

                        No.
There really is no truth to the analogies if they are wrong or, can be severely misinterpreted.

Alright, well you can take this article as an example to all my articles, I really do not care. I found the criticism I was looking for with the grammar problems and analogy issues. My other articles are a lot better (yes, actual professionally recognized freelance writing) and I'm a premier marketplace writer on Helium, too.

I got what I came for, thanks for the constructive criticism (from most of you). Honestly, I've been with Bullshido for almost four years but the stupid comments that really don't help anyone don't change. Christ, the only courtesy and respect I see around here is from the main moderators.

You published this poor piece of work now, you are upset because, your other work is professional?

Please tell me you see the problem in this statement.

Btw, thanks for all the comments. Hell, part of doing the whole writing thing is learning and improving. I just started out and I'm not even out of college yet.

Yeah so the verdict is the article isn't top notch quality, I reconsider that whole topic move request.

To Kentucky Fried Chokin, PeopleSoft, and Coach Josh, I'll consider the criticism (and thanks for leaving out the pointless "your article blows, go to hell" comments that most of Bullshido posts), thanks.
