    McDojos...older then McDonalds.

Most people will credit the popularity of MA movies in the 60s and 70s, as well as the ninja craze of the 80s as the birth of the bastard children that came to be collectively known as McDojos. I too thought that this was the case until, through an Indian Jones-esq adventure filled with ancient puzzles and Nazis, I came across this ancient artifact from 1905.

It claims to teach jiujitsu THROUGH POST, not even videos, but through the goddamn mailman. Also, it will cure constipation (I would hate to be the guy's sparing partner when that aliment suddenly clears itself up), dypepsia, indigestion, corpulency, and loss of vitality.

Even better, going by the best available research, "Kara Ashikaga" never even existed. The only Japanese jujitsu instructors in England at that time were former instructors at the Bartitsu Club (Yukio Tani and Sadakazu Uyenishi) and serious competitive jujitsuka including Akitaro Ono and Taro Miyake.

The "Ashikaga School of Jujitsu" in Liverpool seems to have been a total con. It was actually run by an Englishman, presumably basing his mail-order "lessons" on the very early magazine articles produced by E.W. Barton-Wright and the earliest jujitsu books that became available in English.

Makes me wish for a simpler time, where you could con people into "taking" your class through the mail. All you needed was a mail box and a picture of a japanese guy.

I could see how someone could fall for it. Even to this day the Japanese are known for their excellent self defense programs.

                yeah...

now you have to con people into buying a "russian bride"

                much more complicated...

PROOF that I'm not a completely useless poster:

I like how they went into that snake-oil pitch at the end there. "Cures constipation, dyspepsia, indigestion, corpulency..." I wonder if it's any good at getting out stains.
