    They're just a drill because you have a compliant partner and are working them in a specific sequence. To ramp up the drill you would have your partner start attacking or feeding you randomly and you have to try to defend, control the limb and do a disarm. (at varying levels of intensity) Its very hard, and enlightening, to see how difficult it really is to deal with someone who is really trying to stab you...and not die.

    FMA's do not have the monoply or all the answers on knife defense. In recent years I've started favoring the approach from my silat instructor. (very serak like) Cover high and low, control the arm above the elbow, distrupt the computer (hit him in the head), and get him on the groud. We don't pass very much at all, and usually don't try for a disarm. We also structurally try to position ourselves so that when you take a cut (note I said when), its in a non-vital area and you don't bleed out.
